TECHNOLOGY OPEN SERIES

The Office of Information Technology’s Academic Technology Unit offers its TECHNOLOGY OPEN SERIES of workshops designed to enhance the use of technology and geared towards faculty and staff. These workshops are hosted on an ongoing basis throughout the semester and are held Monday through Tursday from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm. Although no appointment is necessary, we appreciate if you send us an email ahead of time.

Blackboard (Bb) Workshops

Bb: Content Areas I
This workshop covers some of the tools available in the Content Areas section of the course control panel. Each tool will be discussed along with their functions and all the available options.

Bb: Content Areas II
This workshop covers the remaining tools available in the Content Areas section of the course control panel. Each tool will be discussed along with their functions and all the available options.

Bb: Course Options I
This workshop is the first of a two-part workshop that offers hands-on practice with the “Blackboard Course Options” section of the course control panel. Covered topics include the uses of the “course design” and “manage tools” links, and all the options available for these links.

Bb: Course Options II
This workshop is the second of a two-part workshop that offers hands-on practice with the “Blackboard Course Options” section of the course control panel. This workshop will cover the uses of the “course design” and “manage tools” links, and all the options available for these links.

Bb: Assignment/Turnitin
Turnitin is a tool, which detects plagiarism. This workshop details how to setup an assignment which will be checked using Turnitin’s database.

Bb: Discussion Board
The discussion board is used to exchange ideas among students and instructors. This useful tool, its setup and uses are discussed in this workshop.

Bb: Test Manager
The test manager is a powerful tool that can administer tests, eliminating the need for bulky papers. Participants in this workshop will learn how to create or modify a test, how to randomize questions and answers as well as integration with the gradebook.

Bb: Gradebook
The gradebook manages points allocated to students throughout the class duration. Participants will learn how to create and modify items in the gradebook, manage manual entries as well as the integration with the test manager and the discussion board.

Bb: User Management
Users can be organized into various groups for study or to complete a project. Partipants in this workshop will learn how to create and manage groups of users as well as modify group settings.

The Microsoft Office workshop series runs every Tuesday. It encourages hands-on participation in designing and creating work that stands out.

MS Word. Participants will design and create a document using graphics, basic editing skills and table manipulation skills covered in this workshop.

MS Excel. Participants will create and edit a spreadsheet using the software’s tools and functions. Integration with MS Word will also be covered, in reference to document merges.

MS PowerPoint. Participants will create and edit a presentation using the software’s tools and functions.

MS Outlook. Covered topics include Calendaring, the Address Book, sharing information, folders and archiving. For more Outlook help, click here.

Podium
This workshop will help instructors understand the procedures of using the media podiums located in most classrooms. Use of DVDs, VHSs, CDs, CD-ROMs and other media, as well as proper procedures for opening and closing all equipment and troubleshooting problems will be covered. By the end of this session, participants should be adept at using the projector, using the computer, using the VCR and using the DVD player.

EMS, FMS, Intranet
The Events Management System (EMS) allows you to view posted events by category, or request an event to be posted online. All posting requests are automatically routed to Marketing for approval and posting. The Facilities Management System (FMS) allows you to view current room and facilities schedules, or request a room for an event. All requests are automatically routed to the assigned room approver for processing and posting. The Intranet portal (Intranet) allows you to access many other administrative functions. You can only access these tools from within the campus or by VPN at http://intranet.stu.edu/

FIRST
The Faculty Initiated Response for Student Tracking (FIRST) system allows instructors to maintain student records via the web. This workshop provides an overview of the system and how it is used.

STAR
The Student Tracking for Advising and Retention (STAR) system allows advisors to maintain student advising records via the web. This workshop provides an overview of the system and how it is used.
