Support for Haiti

St. Thomas University’s efforts to help create sustainability in Haiti were highlighted in an in-depth article by the Catholic Relief Services.

The article, Haiti Co-Op Pins Recovery Hopes to Fair Trade, mentions the trips to Haiti by STU students and faculty to create sustainability programs such as the Fair-Trade Artisan project with Haitian women; a Solar Energy Program in Baie-de-Henne - one of the poorest, most deforested regions of the diocese; and the Fair-Trade Coffee Collaboration with coffee farmers from throughout the diocese of Port-de-Paix.

“We decided instead of just sending money for a hurricane let’s do long-term, sustainable development,” Professor Anthony Vinciguerra, coordinator for St. Thomas University’s Center for Justice and Peace, was quoted in the article.
