St. Thomas University:
Committed to Advancing the Quality of the South Florida Art Industry

On November 6, 2010, St. Thomas University's Institute for Communication Entertainment and Media hosted their inaugural art man agemen t seminar titled "Learn the Business of Art". The seminar's guest speaker s included Yanet Moyano, Attorney-at-Law, Dr. Tony Fernandez, Educator & Professional Photographer, Dr. Gloria Ruiz, Director of the Institute for Communication Entertainment and Media, Patrick De Bokay, World Cinema Group Director and Pedro Figueredo, Director of Archives/Museum. The attendees applauded the Art Management program for providing a well rounded curriculum addressing the educational needs for artist, art managers, gallerist, museum managers, event organizers and others involved in arts organization interested in succeeding in the business of art.

Yanet Moyano highlighted the Legal Aspects of Arts Administration addressing such issues as copyright and trademark. Dr. Fernandez added a unique perspective on global arts marketing medium that uses Second Life (a simulation software) to view art galleries in a virtual world. Patrick De Bokay discussed the importance of developing a strong marketing network of professionals that will support the Art Managers goals. Pedro Figueredo offered an insightful presentation on the intricacies of museum management.

Dr. Ruiz emphasized education as a catapult for professional art managers to advance the quality of the South Florida art industry. Dr. Ruiz stated, "Miami is a recognized international contemporary arts and culture center that needs art managers with the sophisticated expertise required for successful competition in an increasingly diverse marketplace. St. Thomas University is committed to preparing art managers who are trained in applying sound communications principles to the various aspects of successful art management. Good communication skills involve both content knowledge and the ability to convey the intent of an art project and engender excitement for it. As such, communications combined with expertise in the arts serves as the foundation for effective management of galleries, museums and artists".
