St. Thomas University is committed to advancing its professional development of current and future secondary school science and mathematics teachers with a commitment to incorporating ESOL methodology in courses that enroll English Language Learning (ELL) students. Among the professional development actions are (1) designation of science, mathematics, science education and mathematics education faculty as a professional unit responsible for the program; (2) designing of content and pedagogical courses to include ESOL methodology to implement and model commitment to ELL students; (3) school-based experience, applications and assessment; (4) action research in continuous development methodology and assessment; (5) systematic recruitment, professional development, placement and follow-up study and support of placements to reduce attrition and increase qualitative achievement and commitment; (6) establishment of University Schools with continuous service commitments and testing for later more general distribution and continuous research commitment for development of programs and teachers of science and mathematics.
