Program Description

Three schools have been selected and invited to be UNIVERSITY SCHOOLS. The two primary purposes of this designation are (1) university provision of university services continuously requested as needed by the schools and (2) university provision of research and development initiatives in support of the schools. The three schools in Miami Dade County are Miami Senior High School administered by Dr. Dan Tosado, South Miami Senior High School administered by Mr. Gilbero Bonce, and Mater Academy High and Middle Schools , administered by Judith C. Marty At each school a university school coordinator is nurturing the partnership of the university with the school by identifying needs and requests for services, arranging conferences and supporting communication between the schools and the university. These coordinators are listed to the right of this statement at our website.

Project SUCCESS

Project SUCCESS is a federally funded OELA initiative focused on improving the quality and effectiveness of ESOL learning in three selected cooperating high schools. The emphasis of this initiative has been on improving achievement by limited English proficiency students in science and mathematics in secondary schools and at St. Thomas University.

The School of Arts, Sciences and Engineering Technology and the Institute of Education at St. Thomas University are cooperating in the advancement of ESOL learning in our county schools. Furthermore, these university divisions have engaged in self-development in the teaching of ESOL students in their programs.

We welcome you to this University Schools/Project SUCCESS Home Site! We will seek to provide support for your teaching and leadership. And we urge your contributing participation. We are committed increasingly and systematically to support development in our schools. Cooperatively the university and each school will engender the capacity for development and for mutual assistance among educators committed to achievement by our students.
