The Siegfried Wiessner Intercultural Human Rights Essay Award

PURPOSE:
In honor and recognition of the distinguished lifetime work of Professor Siegfried Wiessner, founder and director of the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, and his unmatched devotion to the program, to human rights, and to a world order of human dignity, seeking to promote understanding and continuing advancement in the field of human rights, the alumni and friends of the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights are pleased to establish the Siegfried Wiessner Intercultural Human Rights Essay Award.
AMOUNT:
The Siegfried Wiessner Intercultural Human Rights Essay Award will consist of three prizes:
The First Prize Winner will receive an award in the amount of $3,000, and the winning essay will be considered for publication.
The Second Prize Winner will receive an award in the amount of $1,500.
The Third Prize Winner will receive an award in the amount of $500.
REQUIREMENTS:
Prizes will be awarded on the basis of an essay contest. Qualifying essays must address issues regarding international law and human rights, using the intellectual framework of policy-oriented jurisprudence. The essays must comprise at least 5,000 words, including footnotes.
ELIGIBILITY:
All students currently enrolled in the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights are eligible to apply for the award.
PROCEDURE:
Applicants will submit their essays directly to the Administrative Assistant of the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights by January 31. Late submissions will not be accepted. The award recipients will be selected by an Award Committee based on an evaluation of the academic quality and originality of each applicant’s essay. The awards will be announced on February 26.
AWARD COMMITTEE:
The Award Committee will be comprised of a member of the program faculty other than Professor Wiessner, the Executive Director of the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, and three graduates of the program. The selection of the winning essays rests solely with the Award Committee, and cannot be appealed.
The Crouch-Kielsgard Human Rights Scholarship
SPONSOR:
Tamara L. Crouch & Mark D. Kielsgard. Mark Kielsgard graduated from the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights in May 2004. Ms. Tamara L. Crouch is his wife.
PURPOSE:
To facilitate the education, training, and scholarship of human rights advocates, activists, educators, and students.
AMOUNT:
The Crouch & Kielsgard Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship to assist a student enrolled in the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights with the cost of tuition, fees, and, if necessary, housing expenses.
REQUIREMENTS:
The scholarship shall be awarded based upon the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to the struggle for an international order of human dignity. This commitment shall be determined based upon the applicant’s efforts prior to attending the LL.M. program as well as his or her plans after graduation. Secondly, the scholarship shall be need-based, with special consideration given to students from developing nations in recognition of the particular hardships they bear in attending the LL.M. program. Finally, consideration will be given to academic scholarship as determined by the selection committee based upon the applicant’s performance in the LL.M. program. The applicants will have to write an essay reflecting these requirements, and must also attach a current C.V.
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be full-time students currently enrolled in the St. Thomas University School of Law LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights.
PROCEDURE:
Students will submit their applications to the administrative assistant of the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights according to the requirements listed above and by a designated deadline. No late applications will be accepted. The scholarship will be awarded prior to the end of the first semester.
SELECTION COMMITTEE:
The selection committee shall be comprised of Professor Siegfried Wiessner, Professor Roza Pati, Tamara L. Crouch, Esq. and Mark D. Kielsgard, LL.M., Esq.
Enrika Herman-Goldstraj Human Rights Scholarship
SPONSORS:
Dr. Hugo Goldstraj kindly offers an educational scholarship to eligible graduate students currently enrolled in the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights at St. Thomas University School of Law.
PURPOSE:
Dr. Goldstraj established this annual scholarship in memory of his mother Enrika Herman-Goldstraj, whose family suffered through the Holocaust. The purpose of this scholarship is to support meritorious and needy LL.M. IHR students who demonstrate outstanding knowledge of and commitment to fighting any reoccurrence of the Holocaust, genocide or crimes against humanity.
AMOUNT:
The Enrika Herman-Goldstraj Human Rights Scholarship is an annual scholarship of $2,000 and may be split among one or more students at the sponsor’s discretion. The award amount will be credited directly to a student’s St. Thomas University account.
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be full-time students currently enrolled in the St. Thomas University School of Law LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights.
REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must also meet all of the following criteria:
(1). Be in good academic standing at the time of application for the Enrika Herman-Goldstraj Human Rights Scholarship;
(2). Complete a formal application for the Enrika Herman-Goldstraj Human Rights Scholarship which includes (i) a confidential personal statement of financial need and (ii) a competitive essay of no more than 2000 words evidencing, generally or with respect to a particular fact situation, how the study of substantive Intercultural Human Rights Law will enhance the applicant’s ability to think strategically, implement research skills, and devise solutions contributing to an order of human dignity at domestic, regional or international levels by confronting human tendencies to distrust those who are different and bring an end to genocide and other atrocities which have bedeviled humankind.

The Scholarship Committee will consist of three members: (1) Dr. Hugo Goldstraj; (2) Professor Siegfried Wiessner, Professor of Law and Director, LL. M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, St. Thomas University School of Law ; and (3) Professor Roza Pati, Executive Director, LL. M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, St. Thomas University School of Law. The committee shall select the student(s) most worthy of receiving the scholarship. The decision of the committee will be final.

Arya Laghaie Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Scholarship
Sponsor: This educational scholarship is established in memory of Arya Laghaie by his family and friends, as well as alumni and faculty of St. Thomas University Law School.
Purpose: An alumn of the Master of Laws Program in Intercultural Human Rights, Arya Laghaie was a young man who tragically lost his life in a hit and run accident, in the town where he was volunteering to assist indigenous peoples. The purpose of this scholarship is to carry on Arya’s work in providing services to indigenous communities and his aspiration for indigenous peoples’ rights. It is awarded annually to a graduate student currently enrolled in the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights at St. Thomas University School of Law, who demonstrates outstanding knowledge of and commitment to the cause of indigenous peoples’ rights, or who has already provided substantial support to indigenous communities.
Scholarship Amount:
The Arya Laghaie Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Scholarship, is an annual scholarship of $3,000 and may be awarded to one student or split among two students at the sponsor’s discretion. The award amount will be credited directly to the winners’ St. Thomas University student account.
Type of Scholarship:
The Arya Laghaie Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Scholarship will be awarded annually on the basis of a competitive essay, as described below, or proof of service to indigenous communities. Deadlines for filing will be established by the St. Thomas University School of Law LL.M. IHR Program.
Scholarship Committee:
The Scholarship Committee will consist of four members: (1) Mr. Robert Laghaie; (2) Dr. Roya Laghaie; (3) Professor Siegfried Wiessner, Professor of Law and Director, LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, St. Thomas University School of Law ; and (4) Professor Roza Pati, Executive Director, LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, St. Thomas University School of Law. The committee shall select the student(s) most worthy of receiving the scholarship. The decision of the committee will be final.

(1). Be a student currently enrolled in the Intercultural Human Rights LL.M. Program at St. Thomas University School of Law;
(2). Be in good academic standing at the time of application for the Arya Laghaie Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Scholarship;
(3). Complete a formal application for the Arya Laghaie Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Scholarship which includes (i) the applicant’s resume (ii) a statement evidencing the applicant’s past service to indigenous communities or (iii) an essay of no more than 1,000 words on general or specific aspect of law or policy regarding the rights of indigenous peoples.
The Djurisic Scholarship “Voice for Justice & Democracy”
SPONSOR:
Aleksandar Djurisic, LL.M., Esq., alumn of the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights since May 2005.
PURPOSE:
Provide financial assistance to LL.M. IHR students who show proof of contribution to the principles of justice and democracy.
AMOUNT:
The Djurisic Scholarship “Voice for Justice & Democracy” is a $1,000 scholarship to assist a student enrolled in the LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights with the cost of tuition, fees, and, if necessary, housing expenses.
REQUIREMENTS:
The scholarship shall be awarded based upon the applicant's demonstrated commitment to the principles of justice and democracy. This commitment shall be determined based upon the applicant's efforts prior to attending the LL.M. program as well as his or her involvement during his LL.M. studies. The applicants will have to write an essay reflecting such a commitment, and must also attach a current C.V.
