DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO TRAVEL

Students may travel in and out of the U.S. with F-1 status while they are registered full time at STU with the following documents:

  • SEVIS I-20 with a signature from the ISA who is also the designated school official (DSO) on page 3 endorsed within the past 12 months. The travel signature is valid for one year from the date it is endorsed. You do NOT need to obtain a new signature each time you travel. One signature is valid for multiple trips out of the country.
  • TRAVEL SIGNATURES: To obtain a signature for travel, please come to the ISA during these times: Wednesday 10-3. Only DSO’s are authorized to sign your I-20 for travel. The ISA is the primary individual that should sign the I-20 at all times. The following are DSO’s who can sign your I-20, if the ISA is not available:

Primary Designated School Officials, PDSO
Toni Mountain, International Student Advisor

Designated School Officials, DSO
Dr. Sarah E. Shumate, VPSA
Lisa Thomas, Associated Director, Student Development

Passport must be valid for at least six months into the future. Passports can be renewed in the U.S.

I-94 Departure Card - This white card will be collected when you depart the U.S. You will obtain a new card when you return to the U.S. Make sure the Immigration Inspector writes the correct notation: F1/DS on your new I-94 card. If you do not see this on your document, you must go back to the inspector to have it corrected before leaving the airport.
Valid F-1 visa - If your F-1 visa has expired you must apply for a new F-1 visa from the U.S. consulate abroad. You cannot apply for the visa from within the U.S. Read notes below about applying for a visa.
