CENTER FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE

The design and delivery of the Center’s programs and networking activities are based on the following objectives:

  • To present and promote broad exposure to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and how these apply to current social justice issues.
  • To confront the issues of racism and discrimination through education and action efforts in cooperation with organizations locally and nationally.
  • To address issues of violence - be they physical, military, political, psychological, spiritual, or economic - and respond in a manner consistent with the Gospels.
  • To act as a resource and catalyst for political responsibility and legislative action on social justice issues.
  • To facilitate interfaith and multicultural understanding through dialogue sessions.

The Center conducts workshops and lectures in local parishes and other locations on Catholic Social Teaching and current justice and peace issues, and serves as a justice and peace resource to parishes, organizations, and dioceses in South Florida.

The Center achieves these goals in a three-fold engagement process:

Community Outreach: The Center supports the work of, and collaborates with, local and national organizations directly addressing issues of poverty, injustice, and diversity in our society. Click here for more information.

Campus Events: The Center hosts symposia, conferences, teach-ins, and dialogue sessions to bring people together and provide a keen analytical lens to issues of faith and social concern in an academic setting. Click here for more information.

Student/Faculty Programs: The Center offers immersion-courses, internships, alternative breaks, and other opportunities for broadening our perspective and realizing the Gospel call to live a faith that does justice. Included in this area is JustFaith – a dynamic, nine-month certificate program sponsored by St. Thomas University and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami. Click here for more information.

Through this three-fold process, and by working in collaboration with numerous local and national organizations (with an especially close affiliation with the US Catholic Church’s domestic and international anti-poverty programs) the St. Thomas University Center for Justice and Peace hopes to facilitate, in what ever way possible, our shared Gospel call to build the Reign of God among us...
