FLOWHE is part of a national system of state networks led by the ACE Women's Network Executive Council of the American Council on Education Inclusive Excellence Group. The American Council on Education has provided national leadership in the advancement of women into executive positions and campus presidencies. Among the twenty seven states that hold active chapters, we as Florida women in higher education have recently added our own.
As our mission, FLOWHE adheres to the principles of the ACE Women's Network and works to:
- IDENTIFY women leaders
- DEVELOP their leadership abilities
- ENCOURAGE the use of those abilities
- ADVANCE women's careers
- LINK them to other women and mentors
- SUPPORT women in mid and executive-level positions throughout their careers
Our Inaugural Conference was held on March 28, 2008 in Miami. Highlights of that day included four presidential panels pertaining to women’s career issues and a keynote address from Dr. Donna Shalala, president of the University of Miami.
A year later, on April 17, 2009, our Second Annual Conference took place in Daytona Beach. Our presidential panel with Dr. Judy Genshaft (University of South Florida) and Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed (Bethune-Cookman University) discussed "Higher Education in an Uncertain Economic Environment". Drs. Genshaft and Reed respectively presented public and private university perspectives on the topic.
On October 8, 2010, in Pensacola, we hosted a dynamic array of speakers discussing everything from using social media networks to managing our own "brand" as professional women. A presidential panel including Dr. Judy Bense (University of West Florida), Ms. Loreen Chant (Johnson & Wales University, Miami Campus) and Dr. Nancy Cooley (Florida State College at Jacksonville, Open Campus) provided the group with valuable insights on how they were able to reach the presidency of their institutions. Our state conference in Florida's "Panhandle" even included women educators from Alabama! By including our neighboring state, we hope to grow the ACE Women's Network and encourage Alabama women to create their own state network.
