Florida Office of Women in Higher Education (FLOWHE)
Since 1973, the Office of Women in Higher Education (OWHE) of the American Council on Education has provided national leadership in the advancement of women into executive positions and campus presidencies. As a subsidiary of the American Council on Education, the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions, OWHE has flourished nationwide. Providing leadership and a unifying voice on key higher education issues and influencing public policy through advocacy, research, and program initiatives, OWHE is a higher education networking organization created by women, for women. Among the twenty seven states that hold active chapters, we as Florida women in higher education have recently added our own.
In establishing the Florida chapter, we adhere to the Office of Women in Higher Education's mission:
o IDENTIFY women leaders
o DEVELOP their leadership abilities
o ENCOURAGE the use of those abilities
o ADVANCE women’s careers
o LINK them to other women and mentors
o SUPPORT women in mid and executive-level positions throughout their careers
Our Inaugural Conference was held on March 28th, 2008 in Miami. Highlights of that day included presidential panels pertaining to women’s issues and a keynote address from Dr. Donna Shalala, president of the University of Miami.
A year later, on April 17th 2009, our Second Annual Conference took place in Daytona Beach. Our presidential panel with Dr. Judy Genshaft and Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed discussed the compelling topic of "Higher Education in an Uncertain Economic Environment". Drs. Genshaft and Reed respectively presented public and private university perspectives on the topic.
