Center for Justice and Peace
In Ex Corde Ecclesia, Pope John Paul II called on Catholic Universities “to discover the roots and causes of the serious problems of our time… [and] to contribute concretely to the progress of the society within which it works.”
The aim of the Center for Justice and Peace is to further this goal at St. Thomas University. Through a combination of faculty/curriculum development, university-wide symposia, and community-based learning courses, the Center for Justice and Peace engages students, faculty and staff in a concentrated, effective effort to institutionalize the church’s call to become salt, leaven, and light to our wider community.
This work is achieved in three geographical regions:
Locally: In North Miami-Dade County St. Thomas faculty and students are working with inner-city congregations to identify and address the root causes of poverty and violence. (Click here for more information). (Click here for more information).
Regionally: Every spring St. Thomas faculty and students go to the fields of Central Florida, collaborating with farmworker organizations to defend the dignity of those who bring food to our tables. (Click here for more information).
Internationally: Through our unique Sister-Diocese partnership with Port-de-Paix, Haiti, St. Thomas faculty and students collaborate on long-term economic development projects to aid the poorest region in the Western Hemisphere. Fair-Trade Coffee development, women’s artisan initiatives, and environmentally-sustainable solar energy projects are just a few ways St. Thomas University students are bringing their faith to life - and making the world a better place. This work is all part of the ongoing development of a comprehensive, Community-Based Learning and Engagement program facilitated through STU’s School of Theology and Ministry. We look forward to you joining us on this journey…
