Study Room Policy
Group Study
Groups (a minimum of two people) of STU law students may reserve study rooms for a maximum of two hours. An additional two-hour period may be reserved in the same room at the expiration of the initial period provided that no other group has reserved the room for the subsequent period.
Individual Study
Individuals are tenants at will and must yield to groups seeking use of the room. Additionally, individuals may not use the Audio-Visual Room for general study purposes and may not reserve rooms. Group study in the AV room may be pre-empted by someone needing to use the room for class preparations requiring Audio Visual viewing.
Study Rooms
Besides the regular study rooms, group study may take place in the Library Seminar Room, as long as no classes or CLE sessions are scheduled, or in the Audio-Visual Room as long as no students need to view audio-visual items for class preparation. In the Spring Term the Audio-Visual Room is reserved for the VITA project. All rooms are subject to pre-emption by the Registrar’s office for exams.
Noise
While talking is permitted in study rooms, it is only allowed to the extent that it does not infringe on the rights of others. Persons using the study rooms should refrain from excessive noise.
Reservations
- To reserve a study room, sign up at the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Copies of the list will be placed outside each study room, but the master list for each room will be maintained at the front desk. DO NOT make amendments to the lists on the doors – changes should only be made at the copy retained at the front desk. Changes made at the doors are INEFFECTIVE because the master list controls.
- Rooms may be requested up to 24 hours in advance. To make an advance reservation, a request may be made at the Circulation Desk not more than 24 hours prior to use.
- Singles can not reserve a study room. They may use it but should move out whenever a group shows for their appointment.
- All names of the group studying will be given at the front desk to reserve the study room. This will prevent individuals from signing up for a room. It also prevents individuals in a group from circumventing the 2 hour maximum by putting one name and then another name and then another, effectively blocking out a room for a day. Groups may ONLY reserve a room for 2 hours. If no group follows after the original reservation another may be made in the same room. Other rooms, however, may be reserved by the same group. Original time limits for reservations apply.
