 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
It is a service through which students, staff, faculty and administration may request materials not owned by St. Thomas University Library.

What types of materials are available?
Request any items you need, with the exception of audiovisual materials. We will attempt to acquire them for you. The success of the attempt will depend on the willingness of the lending library. This is especially the case with rare books and special collections materials.

How long does it take to get materials?
We will submit your request quickly and efficiently. The delivery time will depend on the type of material you order and its availability from other institutions. Generally, journal articles and books are available with in 10-14 days. Materials that are not available broadly by other institutions may take longer to arrive. Please take this in consideration when requesting your materials. If the materials are available locally and you need them promptly contact the Circulation Desk to inquire about a SEFLIN card, as this may be a more appropriate option.

How much does the service cost?
St. Thomas belongs to several consortiums of libraries, which allows us to borrow at no cost to you.

How do I place a request?
You may go to the ILL Access Links above and submit a request using the online form, email or a paper request at the circulation desk. Be sure to fill in as much information as possible in order to increase your likelihood of obtaining your materials. In order to be processed all request must include an STU email address.

How am I notified that my items have arrived?
A notification will be send via STU email or by telephone.

How long can I keep the materials?
Articles (photocopied) unless otherwise indicated are yours to keep. For books, the due date will indicated on the strap of the book. The average time is two weeks. If you wish to renew you may request one in writing no later than 5 days from its due date. You will be notified if the lending institution has approved this request and receive a new due date. Occasionally the library will receive a “RECALL Materials” request. You will be contacted with a new due date.

Where do I pick up my materials?
You may pick up your materials at the circulation desk during normal business hours. If you need assistance from the ILL department you may call 305-628-6665 or 305-628-6671 for the Interlibrary Loan Librarian. If you are a distance learner student, the materials will be mailed out to you along with a stamped return envelope.

Where do I return ILL materials?
Please return all books to the Circulation Desk, unless otherwise indicated. Distance learning students have the option of returning the books via mail.

What happens if I am late or lose something?
Borrowers are responsible for the cost of replacing items and overdue charges. The materials are property of the lending institution. Therefore every effort should be made to return materials promptly and in good condition. The cost is determined by the lending library. Failure to return materials on time may result in losing our privilege to borrow materials form that library.

      NOTICE: WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright laws of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified by law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or reproduction.

One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
