STU Mission Statement
St.Thomas University is an urban, student-centered, Catholic
university with rich cultural and international diversity, dedicated to
developing leaders who contribute to the economic and cultural
vitality of the regions they serve.
History
The seeds of St. Thomas University were planted in 1946 in Havana,
Cuba, when a group of Augustinian priests from Philadelphia founded
the Universidad de Villanueva, Cuba’s first private Catholic university.
At the height of its success, the Universidad de Villanueva housed
renowned Schools of Education, Business, Law, Liberal Arts and
Science. However, by 1961, Fidel Castro’s militia had confiscated the
school’s land and expelled the Augustinian Fathers. After their
expulsion, many of the University’s students and staff members came
to Miami.
With the sudden influx of Cuban intellectuals, the Diocese of Miami
invited the Augustinian founders of Universidad de Villanueva to start
a Catholic men’s college.
Despite being founded with limited resources, Biscayne College
eventually became one of the most elite men’s colleges in the South.
In 1984, Biscayne College changed its name to reflect its cultural
heritage and pay homage to the patron Saint of the Universidad de
Villanueva, St. Thomas. Today, St. Thomas is a Catholic university with
a rich heritage and culturally diverse population, dedicated to
“Developing Leaders For Life.”
