St. Thomas University Partners with The American Red Cross to Keep The Community Safe During a Hurricane
St. Thomas University and The American Red Cross have partnered making the university campus a distribution site for the community of cities that are near the campus such as Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Opa-Locka and Hialeah during a hurricane or other emergencies.
Typically “kitchens” are established when power outages are expected for a week or more. They are used when at least 10,000 meals per day are needed. The St. Thomas University campus will also serve as a point of distribution site for Miami-Dade County in case of emergency. Water, ice, meals and tarps will be distributed on campus to the community as needed.
“We are fortunate to have an area on campus that is ideal for the operation of a Red Cross kitchen, which will help the area return to some normalcy after a hurricane,” said Tim De Palma, Assistant to V.P. for Emergency Management. The University's past experience in responding to hurricanes makes us keenly aware of the need to plan. We are committed to helping the Red Cross and our neighbors in their recovery from a natural or man made disaster.”
