International Education Week Events

NOVEMBER 17 - NOVEMBER 21, 2008

Since its inception St. Thomas University has harbored a culturally rich environment that encourages the individual person and their ethnic origins. As a result of this outlook, STU is one of the most diverse educational communities throughout the South Florida region.

The university community is home to students from approximately sixty-five countries. Given this diverse group, the Office of International Services has hosted the annual International Education Week Program on behalf of St. Thomas University. International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange world-wide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of an effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for the global environment. The designated dates for this national initiative are November 17th, through November 21st.

At STU, we have developed a weeklong program, entitled A Journey around the World.
The Week will kick off on Monday, November 17th with the renowned international speaker, Mr. Heissam Jebailey. Mr. Jebailey will deliver a presentation on various scholarship opportunities that are available to international students. He will also share leadership and career tips for success regardless of one’s desired field. This presentation will be held in the Evelyn & George Goldbloom Convocation Hall from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Upon the conclusion of the presentation, complimentary refreshments will be served.

On Tuesday, November 18th the International Education Week coordinating committee will host a booth in the Student Center from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. where American citizens who need to apply for or renew their passports can obtain the necessary documents and directions for completing the application process.

On Wednesday November 19th at 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., the Rathskeller will host the “Journey around the World” spoken word poetry event. At this event, students will be given an opportunity to showcase cultural poems, songs, and dances. We will also be blessed with words from a local poet and feature for the night, Poetic Vibez.

On Thursday, November 20th, the Office of International Services and the Immigration Clinic of the School of Law will collaborate in hosting an Immigration Forum, where nationally recognized attorneys will discuss newly implemented immigration laws and how they affect F-1, J-1, or even perspective H-1B visa holders. This event will be held in the Evelyn & George Goldbloom Convocation Hall at 2:00 p.m. Upon the close of the panel, a small reception will follow.

The Week’s festivities will culminate on Friday, November 21st in the Student Center with our annual Culture Day celebration. Clubs & Organizations will team up with faculty in representing an array of countries. We will be entertained by the steel drums of Mr. George Jules, while sampling food from all over the world. Several athletic games will be hosted, including International Cricket and Soccer. This event will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will conclude at 3:00 p.m.

The Office of International Services and the International Education Week committee would like to cordially invite the STU community to participate in the scheduled events of the week. So see you November 17th through the 21st.
