Troubleshooting Problems with your SSN Application?

When F & J visa holders submit applications for a Social Security Number (SSN), the agency must verify your immigration status in the SAVE Program. The SAVE program and SEVIS will sometimes encounter technical problems or errors with SEVIS records. If you are notified by SSA that the SAVE Program could not verify your status during initial verification, it does not necessarily mean that you are not authorized to be in the United States. It may be the result of a processing error or the need for additional or corrected documentation. Should you experience an issue with your SSN application, contact ISSS for assistance at intlserv@stu.edu. Please include the following information in your email:

  • Benefit requested (SSN)
  • Family name
  • First name
  • Date of birth
  • Form I-94, “Arrival/Departure Record,” admission number (11 digits)
  • SEVIS ID
  • Physical address (required), phone number (required), and e-mail
  • Address of the office where problem occurred (and the name of the official, if known)
  • Date of the latest visit to office
  • SAVE case number (if available)
