Resident Assistant Selection and Application Process

Thank you for expressing an interest in becoming a Resident Assistant (RA). Below you will find the following links: job description, application form and reference form which includes a grade point average release form. Please review the RA position description before applying.


Minimum Application Requirements

  • Undergraduate applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. A GPA of at least 3.0 must be maintained during each semester of employment.
  • Graduate applicants (not including Law students) must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. A GPA of at least 3.0 must be maintained during each semester of employment.
  • Applicants must not have an active judicial file.  All applicants will be screened to ensure they meet this requirement.
  • Undergraduate applicants for Resident Assistant must have at least 24-credit hours, Graduate students must have 3-credit hours by the beginning of the contract period and Law students must be an L2 by the beginning of the contract period and be enrolled as a full-time degree-seeking student at St. Thomas University.
  • Applicants must be available to commit to one full academic year beginning August 2014.

If after receiving your application we find that you do not meet the minimum requirements established for the RA position your interviews will be cancelled. You will be notified via your STU email address if this occurs.

  • Complete every item on the application. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • List names, addresses, and current phone numbers of the individuals filling out reference forms for you. Please contact the individuals prior to listing them on the application to make certain that they are willing to fill out the reference form. Explain the position and its responsibilities to your references.
  • Complete an application form online by Monday, March 31, 2014.
  • For students without a social security number, please insert 000-00-0000 on the application form.
     

Position Description

Being a Resident Assistant is a privilege. As a member of the Residence Life Staff, the Resident Assistant (RA) is responsible for establishing and maintaining a positive living environment for resident students. The Resident Assistant is a 24-hour live-in student staff member responsible for community development activities; educational, diversity, wellness, community service, spiritual, and social programs; policy enforcement, building duty coverage, administrative functions, crisis intervention, and group and individual assistance. The Resident Assistant reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life & Services and Dean of Students.

The following are the specific qualifications and general descriptions of the major areas of responsibility. Student Affairs staff members may assign additional tasks as needed.

A. Qualifications 

  • A semester and cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00.
  • Full-time enrollment as a degree-seeking student at St. Thomas University. 
  • A minimum of 2-semesters completed by start of employment.
  • Be available to serve on the staff for two semesters (one academic year), or the remainder of an academic year. Re-employment is contingent upon performance.
  • An RA may not engage in part-time work exceeding 10 hours per week (excluding approved on-campus work study or assistantship) while serving as an RA.


B. Terms of Agreement

  • August 2014-May 2015 (Excluding Winter Break)
  • Live in assigned residence hall space during contract period and abide by all terms and conditions of the Residence Hall Contract.
  • Arrangements for extended leave (two or more nights) from the residence hall must be made in advance with the AD-RL.
  • Termination of employment by either party, Resident Assistant or Residece Life,  during the contract period is subject to the conditions of the Employment Agreement.

Areas of Responsibility

A. Time Commitments

  • Attend weekly scheduled Residence Life staff meetings to share information, discuss community concerns, and develop job-related skills.
  • Attend scheduled one-on-one meetings with Associate Director of Residence Life to receive feedback regarding job performance, discuss staff and building issues, and share other pertinent information.
  • Attend once-a-semester one-on-one meetings with Dean of Students to receive feedback regarding job performance, discuss staff and building issues, and share other pertinent information.
  • Assist with opening and closing of the facilities at the beginning and at the end of each semester and provide building coverage over vacations, holidays, and semester breaks when buildings are open (including Thanksgiving and Spring Break).
  • Responsible for weeknight and weekend duty coverage 2-3 times per month. Resident Assistants are expected to complete 3 rounds per night, the last shift accompanied by a Public Security Officer.
  • Attend and participate in staff training sessions. This includes, but is not limited to, spring and fall training, and in-services training as required the Dean of Students and the Associate Director Residence Life and Services.
  • Be accessible and available to residents.
  • Attend Student Affairs activities and functions.
  • Work 20 hours per week in the Residence Life office or other designated location.


B. Community Development and Programming

  • Become acquainted with and develop relationships with all residents.
  • Eat at least one meal per day in the market place.
  • Assist residents with developing community by initiating activities throughout each semester, organizing and encouraging study breaks, and holding community meetings.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement educational, diversity, wellness, community service, spiritual, and social programs under the supervision of the AD-RL. RA’s must complete a minimum of eight required programs per semester from the above-named categories unless directed by the AD-RL where applicable. Some examples of programs include: personal safety and security, roommate workshops, acquaintance rape, substance abuse, appreciation of differences, and AIDS awareness.
  • Assess and interpret residents’ interests and needs periodically and respond with appropriate programs and interventions.


C. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing daily building operations and services (e.g., building opening and closing, check-in/check-out, room changes, room condition forms, Residence Life Office operation, room inspection, health & safety inspections, roster verifications, etc.).
  • Check your Residential Life office mailbox after 5:00 p.m. on a daily basis.
  • Check your STU email account on a daily basis.
  • Complete Resident Assistant weekly reports.
  • Disseminate and post Student Affairs and Residence Life information. Collect information from residents relative to Residence Life matters.
  • Follow-up on maintenance concerns, investigate damages, and write situation reports as necessary.
  • While completing Residence Life office shift, the RAs are expected to: check their mailbox for tasks and updates; dress appropriately; address customers courteously, amicably and promptly; comply with proper telephone etiquette; limit personal visits and telephone calls; not consume meals during shift hours; leave office clean and tidy. Please refer to the Residence Life office Protocol for additional expectations. 


D. Policy Enforcement
  

  • Inform residents of all Residence Life and University policies.
  • Identify students who impose upon community standards and violate Residence Life and/or University policies or regulations. Document incidents as required.
  • Write clear and concise situation reports, preferably typed, and assist with follow-up action as requested by the Associate Director for Residence Life, Dean of Students & Chief Housing Officer, or other University Judicial Officers.


E. Coverage/Emergency Responsibilities
 

  • Respond to emergencies and crisis situations as they occur, whether on or off duty.
  • Maintain residence hall safety and security at all times.
  • Complete building duty coverage as scheduled by the AD-RL Resident Assistants cannot be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while on duty.


F. Role Model

  • Conduct yourself in an honest, conscientious, and courteous manner at all times, showing respect for persons of all backgrounds, races, genders, interests and abilities. Resident Assistants are further expected to identify persons who do not exhibit this respect for individuals and notify the Associate Director of Residence Life or the Dean of Students.
  • Serve as a role model by supporting all University and Campus Life policies. This includes for example, all policies concerning purchase, possession and consumption of alcohol. Obvious intoxication of a Resident Advisor does not fit within the framework of a positive role model and is considered unacceptable behavior.


G. Communication and Referral

  • Provide residents with information on University services and refer residents to appropriate services.
  • Work cooperatively with all Student Affairs Staff members.
  • Maintain on-going communication with the Associate Director for Residence Life and the Campus Life Office in regard to issues or concerns related to the residents or facilities.
  • Follow established channels when voicing opinions regarding Residence Life, University policy, procedures, or processes.
  • Support the goals and philosophies of the Division of Student Affairs.


H. Resident Assistant Performance Guidelines

Resident Advisors will receive assessments on their performance during scheduled one-on-ones. Failure to meet set expectations will result in disciplinary actions. Please refer to the Resident Assistant Performance Guidelines for detailed description of each stage.
