Financing college education can be an expensive task. However, both the federal government and institution have found ways to supplement your actual expenditures. All undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which has an online component. Student and parents needing assistance can visit the Financial Aid Office to obtain assistance in completing this online application.
Undergraduates
For undergraduates, you must have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) prior to completing your FAFSA on-line. If you do not have you PIN, please visit www.pin.ed.gov to register. PIN applicants and holders will be required to select and answer a challenge Question. Please allow a minimum of 3 days for this process.
If you wish to work on campus, when completing the on-line FAFSA application, you must mark federal student employment or indicate that you want to work on campus. Many departments on campus seek student employees to assist with office or department operation. Major departments hiring students include: Athletics and Intramurals, the Library, Office of Information Technology, Enrollment Services, and Student Affairs. Students must inquire at these departments to find out about specific job responsibilities and qualifications required. Individual departments may have both positions available for federal work-study or if they have special needs, they may be using institutional dollars to fund student employment positions. Because Federal Student Work-Study is limited to citizens of the United States, there are limited opportunities for international students unless a department has self-funded their positions with institutional dollars.
Jobs on campus fall into four categories: Clerical Assistant, Tutors, Researchers and America Reads. Depending upon your skill level, you can qualify for one of these categories. It is always helpful to take a current resume of your experiences when you visit departments seeking employment.
STU B.A.S.I.C. offers an array of school-related services to current and prospective undergraduate, graduate and law students, including registration, financial aid and student account issues. There are online forms for Loan request, Federal Stafford Loan online application, FRAG application and PLUS Loan on-line application. STU B.A.S.I.C. can assist with scholarship application as well as all financial aid forms. They will also provide assistance with Work-Study time sheets and distribution of job assignment forms for Work-Study.
Graduate Students
Graduate students are eligible for graduate assistantships and loans. Each academic department has some graduate assistantships available. Please visit the Dean for Graduate Studies and Programs Office located in O’Malia Hall right across from the vending machines for more information. Some administrative departments have self-funded graduate assistantships so depending upon your background and skills, employment may be available.
Work-Services Program
Because we know the price of private education continues to rise. St. Thomas University recognizes the need to be creative in assisting students in financing their college education. It is our hope that such creativity will assist students in attaining their educational goals. St. Thomas University’s cost of tuition has consistently risen 5% each year for the past five years. The Division of Student Affairs has developed the work-Services Program to aid in deferring the cost of tuition. The Work Services Program is available to students who are not eligible for Federal Work Study and have successfully completed their first year of enrollment at St. Thomas University.
The Work-Services Program is a tuition waiver of up to approximately $1500.00 per semester. Students receive $6.15 per hour for work performed. A Work Services Program student must complete 20 hours per week to receive the total tuition waiver (i.e. 20 hours per week @ $6.15per hour x 12 weeks = $1500.00).
The Work-Services assignment is approved on a semester by semester basis only. Continuance in the Work-Services Program is not guaranteed.
