Alvin Murray, B.A. Sports Administration ‘07, Managing Director of ALM Sports and Club President of Miami Lakes United Soccer Club

Alvin Murray, a native of the United Kingdom, played youth soccer for a number of professional teams including Norwich City FC, Southend United FC in England and 2nd division Pro in the Netherlands. Alvin turned to coaching after an ongoing injury that cut his playing career short. He was offered the opportunity to work for Premier League Professional Club team Tottenham Hotspurs in England as a community coach and regional director. Alvin made the move across the pond when he was offered a scholarship to play soccer and study at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina and then St. Thomas University.

Alvin graduated from St. Thomas University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Administration in 2007. He is the Managing Director of ALM Sports, Club President of Miami Lakes United Soccer Club, and has been coaching youth sports for more than 10 years.

1. When did you start ALM Sports and what led you to make the decision to incorporate in the U.S.?
I initially incorporated ALM Sports Ltd. in London, England in 2004. I was working for a professional soccer club in the Community Sports Department, and there was a demand for different programs that our current club was unable to provide at the time. In partnership with the professional club, ALM Sports was able to satisfy the demand in the community. Fast forward to 2007, and I incorporated ALM Sports LLC in South Florida.

2. Why launch a business here in South Florida, why continue it back home in the U.K?
I had the opportunity complete my education while playing soccer in Miami, but I wanted to keep my U.K. business in operation until I graduated. While studying, playing soccer, coaching soccer, and operating the business in South Florida, I began to form great partnerships and create job opportunities for fellow coaches. Upon graduation, I decided to continue my growth in Miami.

3. How did St. Thomas University prepare you for this undertaking?
Majoring in Sports Administration, under Dr. Bell’s curriculum and guidance was the icing on the cake for me to develop my sports business in South Florida. STU provided much needed contacts, formulas and business strategies for me to succeed.

4. What are some important steps that an entrepreneur should take when launching their business?
Believe in yourself and your product or service. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Plan for the best and prepare for the worst – make sure you are able to adapt and adjust to situations and even your business model. Most importantly, never give up!

5. What’s next for ALM Sports?
We are continuing to expand our youth sports programs with plans to package our model for franchise opportunities.

6. What's next for the Miami Lakes United Soccer Club?
We will continue our soccer training programs to ensure fun, development and progression.
