The History degree within the History, Philosophy and Global Studies department offers students the opportunity to study the past, both for its own sake and for the perspectives it offers on the present.

Historical studies have value for students in any discipline. The student of history learns the nature of evidence and how to handle and interpret many different kinds of evidence. He or she learns to expect and to resolve conflicting interpretations of major issues, and learns the uses and misuses of past experience as a guide to present action. The study of history develops intellectual abilities which will be useful throughout life. Moreover, every discipline has a history of its own, and most base some of their conclusions on data from the past.

THE STUDY OF HISTORY IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY

The field of history has changed significantly in recent decades—and public interest in history has grown. From the development of the field of women’s and local history to new perspectives on cultural analysis and cultural diversity, the discipline of history has expanded in scope, theory and methodology. Moreover, increasing attendance at historical sites and museums, as well as interest in documentary films and the History Channel, has spurred the growth of the field of public history.

The study of history at St. Thomas University reflects these changes, while maintaining our traditional strengths in Medieval, Modern Western European and U.S.history. In our core offerings, students now may choose among courses in European, American, and World history. For upper-level undergraduates, the History faculty offer a variety of courses in Florida , African American history, American social history, medieval history, European intellectual history and women’s history. History students also have the opportunity for on site learning experiences in places as varied as, Key West , St. Augustine and Madrid, .
