SAN LORENZO DE EL ESCORIAL

Located in the Guadarrama Mountains approximately 25 miles from Madrid, The Town of El Escorial is a fashionable town filled with restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops. Its 18th century theater offers a variety of entertainment ranging from ballet to jazz every weekend. El Escorial is a forty minute bus ride from The capital Madrid the sixteenth century Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial houses the University Maria Cristina where you will study. This university will give you the opportunity to meet Spanish students after or between classes in the halls or in the university bar. The university facilities include:

CLASSES DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO KNOW SPAIN

 

HISTORY OF SPAIN - This three credit course, which will survey the History of Spain from the Celto Iberian period to the present is designed to introduce students to the rich cultural, political, and social, history of the country. The course will include excursions to the Museum of Archeology in Madrid as well as to local sites of historic interest.

EXPLORING CAMINO SANTIAGO - This three credit course will study the history, architectural and material culture that can be discovered along El Camino Santiago, the historic pilgrim trail that stretches through the regions of northern Spai.n. The class will conclude with a four day walk on El Camino Santiago.

HEMMINGWAY IN SPAIN -This three credit course will study the life of Ernest Hemingway and concentrate on those works he wrote while in Spain or about Spain. Taken collectively they provide the student with an intimate view of Spanish geography and life.

HOUSING
The
Hotel Florida a modern three star hotel located one block from the university will provide room and board for our students. Its cafe is one of the traditional gathering spots in the town and a center of activity.

EXCURSIONS

While on the program you will have the opportunity to take part in three major excursions

SEGOVIA
This city contains the largest exisiting Roman aqueduct in all of Europe. It al;spocontains the castle where Isabel lived when she was crowned Queen of Castile. After leaving the city, students will continue on to the small town of Pedraza where they will enoy a lunch of suckling lamb prepared in an ancient wood burning oven.

TOLEDO
The Imperial city of Spain reaches back to the Visigothic era and is the site of many famous monuments and moments in Spain’s history. The entire town is a museum of Spanish medieval and Renaissance Aarchitecture.

MADRID
Depending onwhat classes they are taking students will go on various planned excursions to MAdrid where the city will become the classroom.

COST $5400 includes Two 3 hour credit classes, Room and Board, travel to and from the airport and excursions to Segovia, Toledo and Madrid. Roundtrip airfare Miami to Madrid  is $1,350.00
