In furtherance with the Pro Bono Mission of St. Thomas University School of Law which incorporates the American Bar Association’s Pro Bono Commitment and Rule 6.1 of the Model Rules of Professional Responsibility which state that “the primary purpose of these programs is to teach all students why Pro Bono service is an important professional value and to introduce them to the ways in which they can contribute in their practice as attorneys, students must complete 40 hours of pro bono during their last two years of law school as a requirement of graduation.

The program recognizes the moral obligation to assist those in need. It gives second- and third-year students legal experience under the supervision of lawyers in a variety of non-profit offices, government agencies and law firms. Students have the opportunity to see how empowering a law school degree can be in helping the underprivileged with legal problems. To promote a lasting commitment to public service, students will be given credit of up to twenty (20) hours of their Pro Bono requirement by contributing their time to community based public service organizations.

The program is coordinated by the Pro Bono Director and Office of Student Affairs. A comprehensive handbook that provides site recommendations and the appropriate forms is available.
