St. Thomas University Human Rights Institute Participates in World Refugee Day Celebrations

The St. Thomas University Human Rights Institute(STUHRI) recently sponsored and participated in the Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Area Refugee Task Force World Refugee Day Celebrations.  Throughout the month of June, community partners host events around the state to recognize Florida’s refugees and the contributions they make to communities. They also help introduce civic, religious and community leaders to organizations and agencies that serve refugees in local communities.

The Broward/Palm Beach event, which took place on June 10th, 2014 was a Family Fun Day with games, crafts, music and entertainment.  There was also a showcase of free community services, as well as an awards ceremony honoring refugees and a special naturalization ceremony.  The St. Thomas University Human Rights Institute manned a booth and handed out school supplies.

At the Miami event, which was held on June 13th 2014, the STUHRI showcased food items, art, and country facts from Guatemala.

The events kicked off on June 10th with the joint Broward/Palm Beach County event and continue through June in Naples, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tallahassee. As a community partner, the STUHRI participates in these events every year and are active in the planning process.  We truly enjoy being part of the team.
