Project SUCCESS: Tutoring ESOL Students in Content Fields
One of the most effective ways to increase the achievement of English Language Learning students in their spectrum of academic studies is by providing effective tutoring. For that reason a trial group of volunteers has been established. This group is directed and trained by Dr. Uria, a full-time tutoring professional working at one of our University Schools, South Miami Senior High.
This trial process of tutoring for the advancement of ESOL high school and middle schools was implemented in 2008.
The tutoring has been designed and called “symbiotic tutoring” meaning that it is continuously planned and realized jointly with the students’ teachers. The tutoring prepares students for sequential class plans of their teacher. For example, prior to a lesson plan on photosynthesis the academic language of the class is taught to the ELL student. Therefore the likelihood of learning and other success is raised significantly.
