Each VITA volunteer is IRS-trained and certified to handle a wide variety of tax issues in order to provide the best possible service to our clients. Under attorney supervision, our volunteers work individually and as a team to make sure any and all of your tax issues are successfully resolved in a timely manner.

Our services include the preparation of various IRS forms, such as:

  • Wages, salaries, etc. (Form W-2)
  • Interest Income (Form 1099-INT)
  • Dividends Received (Form 1099-DIV)
  • State Tax Refunds (Form 1099-G)
  • Unemployment Benefits (Form 1099-G)
  • IRA Distributions (Form 1099-R)

  • Social Security Benefits (Form SSA-1099)
  • Simple Capital Gain/Loss (Form 1099-B) (subject to limitation)

  • Gambling Winnings (Form W-2G)
  • Cancellation of Debt (Form 1099-C) (subject to limitation)

Important: Volunteers are only capable of resolving tax issues that fall within the scope of the IRS-provided training. As such, some of the tax issues that arise from your tax return may be outside the scope of the VITA, meaning we may not be able to complete your return. Some of the services we CANNOT provide at this VITA location include:

  • Health Savings Accounts (Form 1099-SA)
  • Complex Capital Gains or Losses (Schedule D) (subject to limitation)
  • Request of Social Security Number (Form SS-5)
  • Non-Deductible IRA (Form 8606)
  • Minor’s Investment Income (Form 8615)
  • Determination of Worker Status for Purposes of Federal Employment Taxes and Income Tax Withholding (Form SS-8)
  • Premium Tax Credits (Form 8962: Parts 4 &5)

For individuals with an income of $73,000 or less, we also offer the St. Thomas University College of Law Facilitated Self Assistance Program.
