STU FALL 2017 POST-DISASTER RESPONSE
Fall 2017 has been an incredibly challenging time, with hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria – plus the earthquake in Mexico – affecting many of the university’s friends, families and colleagues throughout the region.
In light of the above disasters, STU’s senior administration has coordinated with its Office of Student Affairs, Registrar’s Office, Office of Campus Ministry, and Center for Community Engagement to develop a comprehensive, university-wide response:
Prayer Intentions: STU’s Office of Campus Ministry is offering Sunday Mass and Wednesday night IGNITE Upper-Room services for all victims of the recent natural disasters (Sunday and Wednesday evenings, both at 7pm, Chapel of St. Anthony). If you have a particular prayer intention for someone affected by the disasters, please click HERE and the individual and/or family will be added to the university’s list of prayer intentions.
Free Room and Board for Transfer Students from Affected Areas: In response to the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, St. Thomas University is now offering free room and board for up to 100 college students from affected islands in the Caribbean who wish to continue their studies at STU. In addition to free room and board, STU will work with each student to provide a 50% disaster relief scholarship (plus all customary financial aid) to help alleviate financial burdens through Spring 2018. For more information click HERE.
Counseling Services: Natural disasters affect all of us, both physically and emotionally. In light of this, STU’s counselling staff has made itself available for all STU faculty, staff and administrators who would like support. Click HERE to make an appointment.
Material Donations: SGA, Campus Ministry, and Athletics will be collecting donations of canned goods, clean clothing (in good condition), and unopened soap/hygiene products for those affected by the storms. Boxes are available outside the offices of Campus Ministry, Student Affairs, and the Athletics office for those interested in donating.
Financial Donations: STU is accepting donations to support students from the affected areas that are hoping to further their education at STU. If you are able to support this important effort, click HERE.
STU is also working in collaboration with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami to support long-term relief efforts in the Caribbean, S. Florida, Texas and Mexico. Financial donations are often the most effective way to help after a disaster, and are greatly in need. Those interested in making a financial contribution to this work can do so directly to Catholic Charities HERE.
Volunteer: On Saturday, Oct. 14th, the STU Center for Community Engagement will be coordinating with Barry University’s Center for Community Services Initiatives to host the “Bobcats + Buckies Respond: Service Day in the Florida Keys.” A bus will leave STU at 7am on 10/14 and return by 7:30pm. Space is limited. Those interested should RSVP HERE. If you have any questions, contact Anthony Vinciguerra, Coordinator of the STU Center for Community Engagement: firstname.lastname@example.org; 305-628-6717.
