Miami, Fl – January 14, 2013 – St. Thomas University recently appointed two new faculty
members who reflect the university’s growing diversity of scholars.

Dr. Yanhui Guo has been appointed as the new Assistant Professor for Computer Science for St. Thomas’ School of Science, Technology and Engineering Management. Before joining the Miami academic community, Dr. Guo attended China’s Zhengzhou University for his undergraduate degree. For graduate school he attended the Harbin Institute of Technology, receiving his master’s degree in computer science. He obtained his doctorate at Utah State University, conducting further research as a fellow scholar in the University of Michigan. His research has included designing and implementing bill classification systems and participating in projects related to business operations. He has also published scholarly works in academic journals for the sciences as well as conference journals such as the European Journal of Scientific Research and Journal of Digital Imaging. Dr. Guo’s specialties include computer vision, medical image processing, pattern recognition and Chinese handwriting character recognition among others. 

Dr. Sony Jalarajan Raj has joined St. Thomas University, School of Leadership Studies as the new Assistant Professor for Communication Arts in the Institute for Communication, Entertainment, and Media.  Dr. Raj is a professional journalist turned academic who has worked in different demanding positions as reporter, special correspondent and producer in several news media channels like BBC, NDTV, Doordarshan, AIR, and Asianet News. Over a decade, Thomson Foundation and Reuters Fellow. Commonwealth Broadcasting Scholarship recipient for Television Journalism.Dr Raj has been in academics as a faculty member in Journalism, Mass Communication, and Media Studies at Monash University, Australia, Curtin University, Mahatma Gandhi University and University of Kerala. After obtaining  his Masters’ Degrees from University of Kerala with a Gold Medal, he took his M.Phil Degree from Madurai Kamaraj University.  His Doctorate Degree is based on the communication and representative aspects of slogans that serve as reference materials for not only in political studies, but also in the communication research.  While working in Monash University, he acquired the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. As a testimony to his teaching excellence, Dr Raj is awarded the Monash University PVC Award for excellence in teaching and learning practices thrice in his five years of academic life at Monash. Dr Raj is an accredited Higher Degree Research Supervisor of several prestigious universities. His teaching expertise revolves around, but not limited to business journalism, television and video production, communication theory, international journalism and sports reporting. Dr Raj is in the editorial board of five major international research journals and he edits the Journal of Media Watch. His research interests include communicative rationality, information flow, digital divides, the news media influences on the public sphere and visual media. He has supervised three Ph.D. research scholars to successful completion. He has extensively published on media, communication, journalism, film and literature in international research journals like Journal of Communication Studies, Journal of Science Communication, Mass Communicator, Journal of Media Studies, Australian Journal of Communication, Research Lines, Research Scholar, Journal of Contemporary Discourses, Indian Social Review and the Indian Research Essence. Dr. Raj has worked in  various administrative positions as Associate Member in the Economic and Business Modeling Research Unit, Member of the Core Committee, and Chairman and Chief Examiner of the Board of Examinations in Monash University, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Curtin University of Technology. Dr Raj is recipient of Reuters Fellowship and is a Thomson Foundation (UK) Fellow in Television Studies with the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Scholarship.
