About the Program

Apply your love of sports and fitness to the world of business while expanding your knowledge and experience with St. Thomas University’s Sports Administration program. Our program is developed to teach the business behind the game, allowing you to become part of the team. You will gain a strong foundation of knowledge in the field of business, examining how the world of business and sports interact and how you can make those interactions more profitable and beneficial for every person and interest involved. In addition, you will learn how to market sports effectively and how to plan events, diving into the areas of sports publicity, budgeting, and administration. An interdisciplinary field, sports administration encompasses elements of economics, accounting, marketing, psychology, law, and communications.

  • St Thomas University started the first Sports Administration undergraduate program in the nation in 1973.

St. Thomas University’s Sports Administration Program has alumni working as general managers and vice presidents in the NBA, NFL and MLB.

Al Avila ’86, general manager of the Detroit Tigers, has been with the Tigers for 15 years. Under his leadership, the Tigers have won the American League Pennant in 2006 and 2012, and won four straight AL Central titles from 2011-2014.





Andy Elisburg ’89, general manager and senior vice president of operations for the Miami Heat, joined the franchise in its inaugural 1988 season. For the past 21 years, he has been working in basketball operations, and has played an integral role in salary cap planning and basketball operations management, while overseeing the day-to-day operations at American Airlines Arena.



Dave Gettleman ’86, general manager of the New York Giants, has been a part of six Super Bowl teams, including three winners. He was with Buffalo in 1990 and 1991, Denver in 1997 and the Giants in 2000, 2007 and 2011. The Broncos and the 2007 and 2011 Giants, which both won the championship.

Formerly provost and chief academic officer for University of the Rockies in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Moreland recently accepted the appointment and will be joining STU this month, leading the Catholic institution into a new year of student-driven success and academic accomplishments. STU to Launch South Florida’s First Master of Science in Medical Sciences Degree Program for Aspiring Medical Professionals

December 20, 2018 Beginning in Fall 2019, St. Thomas University (STU) will introduce South Florida’s first and only Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) degree program. STU’s MSMS will be presented in partnership with Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) through Tiber Health Innovation and will be taught by PHSU’s medical school faculty and STU’s science faculty. St. Thomas Law wins National ABA Labor Law Trial Competition, Two Years in a Row

January 29, 2019 For the second year in a row, St. Thomas University School of Law’s trial team was crowned the 2019 ABA Labor and Employment Law National Trial Competition champions. The annual national competition was held from January 26-27 in New Orleans, La., and featured six law schools from around the country – William & Mary, UCLA, Washington University, Brooklyn Law, SMU School of Law and St. Thomas University School of Law; all champions in their own regions.
