Sr. Cortes is a Claretian Missionary Sister. She has spent most of her life in the formation and education of young people in school and ministerial settings. She is a member of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States and serves on its board. She is also a member of The Association of Practical Theology and the Latin American Studies Association.

Her research and teaching interests focus on practical theology of reconciliation with a special interest in the context of the Cuban exile. She has worked on processes of reconciliation which incorporate psychological, social, and faith dimensions. She is interested in issues of forgiveness, conflict transformation, peace building, as well as Caribbean Popular Religion, Latino/a Theology, and Liberation Theology.
