Center for Justice and Peace: Local Programs
“A Catholic University, as any University, is immersed in human society; as an extension of its service to the Church, and always within its proper competence, it is called on to become an ever more effective instrument of cultural progress for individuals as well as for society.”
-Pope John Paul II, Ex Corde Ecclesiae
In North Miami-Dade County St. Thomas faculty and students work with inner-city congregations to identify and address the root causes of poverty and violence.
This is accomplished through intensive community-based learning opportunities. These are courses and internships, rooted in the Catholic Tradition, that research significant issues raised by community partners, build relationships of solidarity with the local community and provide an experiential context where academics, a faith that calls for justice, and real-world social problems converge in an intensive transformational learning process.
