Dr. Jan Bell has been teaching sports administration courses at St. Thomas since 1985. She was instrumental at getting the graduate and undergraduate sports administration programs recognized as approved by the SMPRC (Sport Management Program Review Council). Dr. Bell served as a program reviewer for the SMPRC from 2002-2007. In addition to serving as the Director of the Sports Administration Programs and Graduate Internship Coordinator, she is also a Professor of Sports Administration and the Faculty Athletic Representative. She served as the Chairperson for the Department of Management from 1992 until 2004. Since 1995, Dr. Bell has recruited graduate students to serve with her as the operations staff for the PBEO Job Fair each December at the Baseball Winter Meetings.
Her involvement in sports has been a lifelong endeavor, initially as a player, then professionally as a teacher and coach at North Caroline High School in Denton, Maryland where she also served as the first female director of athletics on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Her desire to teach at the college level led her to obtain her doctoral degree and subsequently to her position at St. Thomas. Dr. Bell has a B.S. in Physical Education from Salisbury State College (MD), a M.S. in Education from the State University of New York -College at Brockport and an Ed.D. in Sports Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia. She teaches Sports Financial Management at the graduate and undergraduate levels and teaches the graduate Seminar & Principles of Sports Administration and Sports Ethics courses.
