PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITES

Lisa Knowles is Associate Professor of Management in the School of Business at St. Thomas University in Miami, Fl. She received a Ph.D. in Global Leadership (Educational Leadership with a Global Perspective: Corporate Emphasis) at Lynn University in 2003. Her graduate experiences included study abroad opportunities in Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and The Bahamas. Her dissertation dealt with international students’ acculturation disparity from which she created a paradigm of cultural distances depicting cultural adequation, cultural lingualation, and cultural discordation.

From 2003 to 2006, Dr. Knowles was Adjunct Professor in the School of Business at St. Thomas University in Miami. In January 2007, she became a full-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Management, and was promoted to Associate Professor in August 2013.

During her career, Dr. Knowles has maintained an active involvement in the South Florida marine industries, serving on the boards of a number of community and non-profit organizations. She is a current member on the Broward Workforce Development Board, their Executive Committee, and chair for their Organizational Resources Committee.  In 2006, Dr. Knowles participated as a production coordinator for a 98-minute DVD produced by WorkForce One and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) entitled, Navigate Your Career: Charting a Course in the Marine Industries. She has been active in the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) and served as chair of their Workforce Committee.

In March/April of 2006 Dr. Knowles attended an international trade mission to China, visiting Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. The trade mission was a coordinated effort by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) for marine businesses to visit various boat manufacturing companies and interact with the developing recreation marine industry principals in China.   In July 2006, she accompanied St. Thomas University graduate students on a European study abroad tour to Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Hungary.

Dr. Knowles served as a panelist at the International Boat Builders and Exhibition Conference (IBEX) in Miami Beach, October 2007, presenting a seminar on International Trade. She has also presented at several local Workforce Professional Placement Seminar Series (October 2007, April 2008, and April 2009), the Academy of Hospitality of Tourism Student Conferences (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012) on marine industries and entrepreneurship. Dr. Knowles served as an advisory board member on both Broward College’s Marine Engineering Management Program and McFatter Technical Center’s marine programs. In 2009, she presented “Women in the Recreation Marine Industry” at the Oxford Round Table in the U.K. 

She presently serves as Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and is the Advisor for the Caribbean Student Association and Phi Beta Lambda student groups at St. Thomas University.

Dr. Knowles has been teaching at Saint Thomas University since 2003.
