About the Program

The Criminal Justice program provides a skill-based experience in understanding the structure and operation of the criminal justice system, including the police, courts, and corrections. Our program focuses on managerial, legal and behavioral dimensions of the major branches of the criminal justice system, explores the nature and extent of crime nationally and internationally, offers a critical view and assessment of crime control efforts and takes on related contemporary contentious issues such as capital punishment, illegal immigration, court reform, and terrorism.

Program Highlights

  • Provides students with the leadership skills, intellectual tools and practical knowledge needed to manage criminal justice personnel and resources, formulate effective crime control policies and strategies, assess current offender treatment programs, and to work with various federal, state and local agencies to bring about safer communities;
  • Students can choose to participate in exciting internships with such agencies as the FBI, Border Patrol, the DEA, U.S. Customs, FDLE, Secret Service, State of Florida Guardian Ad Litem, and Miami-Dade Police Department.

  • Special fast-track programs leading to a combined BA and Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, an expedited BA/JD degree, as well as a joint JD/Master of Arts in Criminal Justice degree

Career Landscape

  • The BA in Criminal Justice prepares students for positions in the FBI, ICE, DEA and other federal law enforcement agencies as well as various state and local agencies such as the Florida Department of Probations, City of Miami Police Department, etc.
  • Graduates are also able to pursue highly rewarding professional careers with the courts, correctional services, crime victim services, as well as various administrative agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency, the Internal Revenue Service, all of which employ special investigators.

STU to Launch South Florida’s First Master of Science in Medical Sciences Degree Program for Aspiring Medical Professionals

December 20, 2018 Beginning in Fall 2019, St. Thomas University (STU) will introduce South Florida’s first and only Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) degree program. STU’s MSMS will be presented in partnership with Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) through Tiber Health Innovation and will be taught by PHSU’s medical school faculty and STU’s science faculty. St. Thomas Law wins National ABA Labor Law Trial Competition, Two Years in a Row

January 29, 2019 For the second year in a row, St. Thomas University School of Law’s trial team was crowned the 2019 ABA Labor and Employment Law National Trial Competition champions. The annual national competition was held from January 26-27 in New Orleans, La., and featured six law schools from around the country – William & Mary, UCLA, Washington University, Brooklyn Law, SMU School of Law and St. Thomas University School of Law; all champions in their own regions.
