The 2023 Florida Undergraduate Research Conference
FAQs
For Presenters
Q: May I present if I am a recent graduate from a Florida institution?
A: Yes, recent graduates from a Florida institution who are not yet enrolled in graduate or professional school by Spring 2023 are eligible to apply.
Q: May I present if I am an undergraduate student in a different state or country?
A: No, student presenters must be enrolled in a Florida undergraduate 2-year or 4-year university.
Q: May I present research not conducted at my home institution?
A: Yes, as long as you are an undergraduate researcher currently enrolled in a Florida undergraduate 2-year or 4-year university, you may present research conducted at off-campus labs, REU sites, etc. Please list your PI as the faculty mentor of the project.
Q: My project has more than one presenter. Do we both need to submit the same abstract?
A: No, please only submit each abstract once from the primary author’s account. Co-authors may be listed on the same application. If accepted, simply ensure that both presenters who will be standing at the poster during the poster session individually register as student presenters via the STU FURC 2023 webpage (https://stu.edu/furc2023). All co-authors listed on the initial application will be listed in the final event program.
Q: How much does it cost to apply?
A: Submitting an abstract for consideration for FURC 2023 is free of cost. However, if accepted to the conference, all student presenters must register and pay the corresponding $60 registration fee or $54 registration fee for students from FURA member institutions (see if your institution is a member of FURA here). We encourage students to seek fee assistance and/or research travel awards from their home institution to cover the cost of registration and/or attendance. If your institution does not provide any form of fee assistance and/or travel award, the Florida Undergraduate Research Association intends to make a fee waiver application available (details TBA) to select students.
Q: My institution is not listed on the Oxford Abstracts abstract submission form. What should I do?
A: Please email FURC@stu.edu with the name of your institution to ensure necessary updates to the submission form are made.
Q: My research project is incomplete. May I still submit my abstract to the conference?
A: Yes, ongoing projects are considered equally for acceptance. In your abstract, summary, or creative statement, we ask that you include your methodology/process for finding results and/or any current data you have already collected, if possible. However, data collection and results are not necessary to be considered for acceptance for the conference. Research proposals, literature reviews, and meta analyses are all valid forms of research that may be accepted to the conference.
Q: What disciplines can present at FURC?
A: FURC is inclusive of all academic research, scholarship, and creative inquiry across all disciplines.
Q: Are poster presentations judged at this conference?
A: No, participants are not judged at this conference. There are no awards.
Q: What should I wear to the event?
A: Business-casual attire that is comfortable for the two-day event. We also recommend wearing comfortable shoes, as some of the workshops may be in different buildings.
Q: Can I select what session I present my poster in, or is it randomly assigned?
A: Times are randomly assigned to all posters. We encourage all presenters to stay for each poster session to visit the other student presentations.
Q: I submitted my abstract. Now how do I register?
A: Registration is a two-step process that must be completed in addition to submitting your abstract. Step 1 requires you to fill out a form with your personal information. You may access it here. Step 2 requires you to submit your payment via Eventbrite. You may access it here. Please note! If you have more than one student presenter for your poster, you both must register as student presenters via the STU FURC 2023 website (https://stu.edu/furc2023). Both steps must be completed by January 26th, 2023, for a successful conference experience.
