Bobcat Mentor Program

The St. Thomas University Bobcat Mentor Program is designed to create personal and professional relationships between current students and alumni mentors, who act as role models and provide guidance. Alumni Mentors will share advice and valuable insight into the transition to the professional world. Student Mentees will be able to build professional networks and further develop their leadership skills.

Bobcat Mentor Program Goals are:

  • To provide alumni with an opportunity to give back to their alma mater and a rewarding experience of mentoring our future leaders.
  • To provide students enrolled in the program with access to industry insights, and career and leadership guidance.

Alumni Mentors
A mentor is a guide and a resource who paves the way to success, and derives satisfaction from helping others succeed. Your role as mentor is to inspire, encourage, and support your mentee, and to contribute to their professional and personal development.

Student Mentees
As a mentee, you’ll learn from your mentor’s personal and professional experience, knowledge and skills. The mentor-mentee relationship allows for individual attention to your career aspirations, professional development, and can expect to strengthen and build your network.

How It Works

  • Alumni and Students interested in the Bobcat Mentor Program will apply to become a mentor or mentee.
  • The Mentoring Committee will review applications in order to match mentors and mentees taking into consideration the professional interests/areas of study/industry indicated on the application.
  • Mentors and mentees will be notified of their match information via email.
  • Mentors and mentees will meet throughout the academic year, from September through April.

Bobcat Mentor Program Expectations & Guidelines

  • Mentors and mentees are asked to make a commitment of six months (Fall or Spring semester) to one academic year (September through April) to ensure mentees are able to fully benefit from the relationship.
    • If a mentor must leave the program early, we request that you provide at least one month’s notice in order to search for a replacement mentor.
    • If a mentee must leave the program early, we request that you provide at least one month’s notice to your mentor, as well as the Mentoring Committee.
  • Mentors and mentees should commit to at least a one (1) hour face-to-face interaction each month.
    • Additional interactions throughout the month are highly encouraged, and can be in person, via phone, email, skype, or text as appropriate.
  • Mentors should have five or more years of professional experience
  • Mentees should be fully admitted as an undergraduate or graduate student at STU
  • Mentors should work with their mentees to determine what kind of support will be most useful to their assigned mentee – general career advice, technical information, personal encouragement, feedback related to internship/job search, and so on.
  • Mentors and Mentees are asked to complete an evaluation to provide feedback on your Bobcat Mentor Program experience at the end of each commitment period (six months / one academic year).
