Pauline Louis-Magiste, MSN-Ed, RN is a graduate of Barry University College of Nursing and Health Science with a master’s degree in nursing science, Education track. Ms. Louis-Magiste works as a fulltime nursing instructor at St. Thomas University School of Nursing Undergraduate Nursing Program. Before transitioning to academia, Ms. Louis-Magiste worked at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida as a full-time surgical intensive care unit (SICU) nurse and continues to work as a SICU nurse on a part-time basis to maintain her clinical skills. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Louis-Magiste took care of COVID-19 patients in extremely critical conditions requiring more than your usual intensive care treatments. As a frontline COVID nurse, seeing the devastation COVID-19 had on the patients she cared for, Ms. Louis Magiste decided to use her position as a community leader to be a voice for her fellow nurses advocating for the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and providing education to the community on COVID-19 prevention and care. During the shutdown, to keep the association spirit up and continue membership engagement, Ms. Louis-Magiste used social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to connect with the association’s members and the community. These platforms allowed Ms. Louis-Magiste to provide relevant, up to date information, and guidance, as necessary. Ms. Louis-Magiste’s efforts were recognized when the Mayor’s Office of Miami-Dade County called upon Ms. Louis-Magiste to record a PSA in Creole promoting wearing masks as part of the COVID-19 prevention campaign. Ms. Louis-Magiste is the immediate past president of HANA of Florida, Inc.

As a nursing instructor at St. Thomas University School of Nursing Undergraduate Nursing Program. Ms. Louis brings a vast amount of nursing knowledge and clinical experience. Ms. Louis analytical approach in teaching provides the students with the knowledge they need to understand nursing concepts and the clinical skills they will need to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. This will not only allow the students to achieve the goal of successfully passing the NCLEX exam but nurses who will be safe, skillful, competent and ready are for the workforce. Ms. Louis’ community involvement brings to the classroom a strong sense of engagement, teaching the students that nursing is more than caring for patients in the hospital but nursing is also caring for your community and being a catalyst for change.

Ms. Louis-Magiste’s nursing career started 21 years ago when she became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) after receiving her Practical Nursing diploma from Lindsey Hopkins Technical School in 2000. As her love for the profession grew, Ms. Louis-Magiste continued her path to scholarship and obtained an associate degree in nursing science in 2004 from Miami-Dade College (MDC) while working full-time as an LPN. Inspired by her colleagues and her love for the nursing profession, Ms. Louis-Magiste went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2009 in which she graduated Cum Laude. Ms. Louis-Magiste’s clinical nursing background includes cardiovascular surgical intensive care, cardiac step-down, med-surgical telemetry, clinical nurse educator, community healthcare nurse, and coordinator of the nurse preceptorship program for Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Before becoming the President of HANA 2019, Ms. Louis-Magiste served as first Vice President of HANA, 2017-2019, Second Vice President, 2015-2017, assistant treasurer and chair of recruitment for the association, 2013-2015, and as co-chair of Public Relations and Legislative Affairs committees. Ms. Louis Magiste is the current chair of the education committee for HANA, Co-host of Koze Sante with HANA TV and Radio health talk show, Co-Chair of the Health Committee, and past treasurer for the Haitian American Professional Coalition, Inc. (HAPC). As an active member of the association, Ms. Louis-Magiste received numerous accolades for her service and dedication to the association and the community.

Ms. Louis Magiste is the recipient of the Prestigious Daisy Champion Award, was inducted into Sigma Alpha Beta Epsilon at Large Miami Dade College Chapter, recipient of The Marie Claire Heureuse Leadership Award by Family Action Network Miami (FANM), Frontliner of the Year 2020 award by the Prestigious, Balancing Life Women in Nursing Award 2020, the first recipient of HANA’s Rookie of the year award in 2012, Nurse of the Year award in 2013.

Ms. Louis-Magiste’s passion for the nursing profession has deemed her a leader, a mentor, and an advocate for the nursing profession, the patients she cares for, and her community.
