Program Description:

The Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program in basic medical sciences intended to provide students with a broad-based curriculum and degree designed to improve their academic record. Its purpose is to increase the competitiveness of the student’s academic record to gain admission to a professional school program.

It is uniquely designed to prepare you for medical school and succeed USMLE board exams. This degree is also for those who are seeking successful careers in medicine and health sciences.

Our program aims to increase the student’s possibilities of acceptance into a Medical Education (MD) Program. We provide students with the medical science curriculum necessary to support improved MCAT test scores and prepare for USMLE board exams.

The top 20% of St. Thomas University Master of Science in Medical Science graduates will be offered an Admissions interview at Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine (PHSU). In order to qualify, students must apply for admission into the PHSU medical program and adhere to all admission requirements.

Admissions Criteria:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  2. Minimum GPA: 2.7
  3. Testing Requirement: MCAT or GRE (PCAT and DAT are also considered) (no minimum score requirement)
    1. Students may be considered for conditional acceptance if test scores are submitted within 60 days from the start of the fall semester
  4. Pre-requisite Requirements:
    1. General Biology I & II (with labs) – 8 credits total
    2. General Chemistry I & II (with labs) – 8 credits total
    3. Organic Chemistry I & II (with labs) – 8 credits total
    4. Physics I & II (with labs) – 8 credits total
    5. Mathematics – 6 credits total
    6. Behavioral and Social Sciences – 6 credits total
    7. Biochemistry – 3 credits total
    8. English – 3 credits total

Graduation Requirements:

Master’s student must pass a comprehensive qualifying exam based on the required course work.  To be eligible for the comprehensive exam a student must have a minimum of 3.00 GPA with no more than 6 credits of C grades.  Any courses completed with a Failing (F) grade must be repeated and replaced with grades of B or better.
