Arrival in the U.S

New F-1 visa holders cannot enter the U.S. more than 30 days prior to the begin date on their I-20.

When traveling into the U.S. you must have the following documents on you:

  • Passport with F-1 visa stamp
  • STU I-20 Form
  • Evidence of financial resources
  • Copy of SEVIS I-901 Fee
  • Letter of Admission to STU

 

If unable to show these documents to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) you might be denied entry to the U.S. Make sure you inform CBP that you are traveling into the U.S. as an F-1 student. Make sure you carry these documents with you, not in your checked baggage.

Passport Entry F-1 Visa Stamp

The F-1 visa stamp placed in your passport by the U.S. consular official indicates your eligibility to enter or re-enter the U.S. as an F-1 student. The stamp should be marked with “F-1 D/S” for F-1 students. D/S stands for Duration of Status. The expiration date on the visa is the last day you can use it to enter the U.S.
