Career Services

Career Services fosters relationships with employers to facilitate employment opportunities to students and alumni for full-time, part-time, and internship opportunities. We combine one-on-one career advising with the latest in career-related technology, including an internet-based system for professional, internship, and part-time openings and resume referrals.

Scheduling an Appointment:

If you are a student, you may schedule an appointment online by simply clicking here and selecting Career Services under Services. You will then see the available time slots on the calendar, and choose the day and time that works best for you.

Alumni, services are available to you for life. If you are thinking of switching careers or would like to opt to a higher-level position in your organization, we are here to help you design your job search strategy and ultimately land that position. Student Self - Assessment
Focus 2 is a Career Assessment tool, which aligns student’s feedback and responses to the University’s programs of study, and provides students with career exploration options. Upon completion of the assessment, the student meets face-to-face with a Career Coach to go over the results and identify potential programs of study. You may find Focus 2 here. First-time users need to enter the self-access code bobcats to create an account.
Job search assistance (On and off-campus)
On-Campus Students may be eligible to participate in the federal or STU work-study program, or work with one of the campus vendors. Schedule an appointment to learn more about these opportunities.

Off-Campus Students have access to job postings, internships, volunteer opportunities, and more through our career management tool – Handshake. Sign in at

It is strongly recommended that a student have his/her résumé critiqued, before applying to jobs to ensure the résumé is professional. Students will find professional full-time, part-time, and internship opportunities. Résumé referral services will be provided on a one-on-one basis based on the student/alumni interest and profile.

Internships and Experiential Learning
Students are encouraged to complete an internship during their program of study. For some majors (business), it is a requirement. Students may be exposed to other experiential learning opportunities, such as shadowing experiences, mentoring, volunteering, etc.

Steps to Follow:

  1. Contact the designated Academic Advisor to register for the internship course;
  2. Meet with Ms. Cristina C. López, Director of Career Services (305.628.6577,, to start the process of searching for the internship and preparing the application materials (résumé, cover letter, etc.);
  3. Complete applications to several internships;
  4. Interview with company representatives;
  5. Once the internship has been secured, the student will notify both the designated Academic Advisor and Ms. López of the internship placement, including contact information of internship supervisor and internship duties.
  6. International students cannot engage in an internship / CPT (Curricular Practical Training), without first meeting with the International Student Advisor for immigration approval. Please contact Mr. Jerry Debe, Assistant Director of International Student & Scholar Services, 305.474.6008,

Career Expos are hosted on-campus bringing a variety of employers twice a year, in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Numerous electronic and hard copy resources on a variety of career-related topics are available to students and alumni.
Career Workshops and Class Visits
Career Services staff present on a variety of topics designed to enhance students’ work readiness and employability skills. They conduct workshops and visit classrooms to do specific-topic presentations.
Mock Interviews
Students can do one-on-one mock interviews with a Career Coach. In addition, we utilize the InterviewStream software for online interviews.InterviewStream prepares job-seekers for entering the workforce by developing the soft skills they need to land their dream job. Bobcat Mentor Program

Bobcat Mentor Program

The St. Thomas University Bobcat Mentor Program is designed to create personal and professional relationships between current students and alumni mentors, who act as role models and provide guidance. Alumni Mentors will share advice and valuable insight into the transition to the professional world. Student Mentees will be able to build professional networks and further develop their leadership skills.

Bobcat Mentor Program Goals are:

  • To provide alumni with an opportunity to give back to their alma mater and a rewarding experience of mentoring our future leaders.
  • To provide students enrolled in the program with access to industry insights, and career and leadership guidance.

Alumni Mentors
A mentor is a guide and a resource who paves the way to success, and derives satisfaction from helping others succeed. Your role as mentor is to inspire, encourage, and support your mentee, and to contribute to their professional and personal development.

Student Mentees
As a mentee, you'll learn from your mentor’s personal and professional experience, knowledge and skills. The mentor-mentee relationship allows for individual attention to your career aspirations, professional development, and can expect to strengthen and build your network.

How It Works

  • Alumni and Students interested in the Bobcat Mentor Program will apply to become a mentor or mentee.
  • The Mentoring Committee will review applications in order to match mentors and mentees taking into consideration the professional interests/areas of study/industry indicated on the application.
  • Mentors and mentees will be notified of their match information via email.
  • Mentors and mentees will meet throughout the academic year, from September through April.

Bobcat Mentor Program Expectations & Guidelines

  • Mentors and mentees are asked to make a commitment of six months (Fall or Spring semester) to one academic year (September through April) to ensure mentees are able to fully benefit from the relationship.
    • If a mentor must leave the program early, we request that you provide at least one month’s notice in order to search for a replacement mentor.
    • If a mentee must leave the program early, we request that you provide at least one month’s notice to your mentor, as well as the Mentoring Committee.
  • Mentors and mentees should commit to at least a one (1) hour face-to-face interaction each month.
    • Additional interactions throughout the month are highly encouraged, and can be in person, via phone, email, skype, or text as appropriate.
  • Mentors should have five or more years of professional experience
  • Mentees should be fully admitted as an undergraduate or graduate student at STU
  • Mentors should work with their mentees to determine what kind of support will be most useful to their assigned mentee – general career advice, technical information, personal encouragement, feedback related to internship/job search, and so on.
  • Mentors and Mentees are asked to complete an evaluation to provide feedback on your Bobcat Mentor Program experience at the end of each commitment period (six months / one academic year).
