The Honorable Jeffrey R. Levenson
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Judge Jeffrey R. Levenson received his B.A, with honors, from Johns Hopkins University in May 1978 and received his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in May 1981. He is a member of the Florida and Maryland bars.
Judge Levenson teaches Trial Advocacy Practice with Judge David Haimes in the Fall and Spring semesters at the St. Thomas University College of Law. He previously served as an instructor in trial advocacy on the faculties of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) and the United States Department of Justice National Advocacy Center (NAC). He is also currently on the faculty for the Florida Bar Advanced Trial Advocacy Course and the Bennet Public Defender and Prosecutor Course. Judge Levenson has taught trial advocacy for over thirty years.
Judge Levenson began his legal career as a prosecutor in Baltimore, Maryland, handling various felonies, including drug trafficking, burglary, and homicide. He was an Assistant State Attorney from January 1982 through July 1986.
Judge Levenson was then appointed as a trial attorney at the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division, in Washington, D.C. In that position, he investigated and prosecuted complex criminal tax cases in federal district courts throughout the United States. He served in that position from August 1986 through February 1989.
In March 1989, Judge Levenson was appointed to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Florida. As a prosecutor in the Criminal Division, Economic Crimes Section, in Fort Lauderdale, he investigated and prosecuted “white collar” crimes, including securities and corporate fraud, bank fraud, and tax fraud. He also served as a civil litigator, defending the United States in a variety of lawsuits, including employment discrimination cases, medical malpractice matters, personal injury cases (including auto-tort and slip and fall allegations), and constitutional tort claims.
Judge Levenson was appointed to the Broward County bench in August 2003. He served as a County Court Judge in the Criminal Division from September 2003 until being elevated to the Circuit Court in January 2006. For 10 years, he served in the Circuit Court Criminal Division and presided over 200 jury trials, including 50 murder trials. From January 2017 through the present, he has served in the Civil Division and handled a variety of civil disputes. He has presided over 100 civil jury trials. (From June 2021 through February 2022, Judge Levenson also handled Probate and Guardianship matters while being assigned to that division.)
Judge Levenson has been extensively involved in the legal community. He is a past president of the Federal Bar Association, Broward County Chapter. He has also been a member of the Bench Bar Committee of the Broward County Bar for over 20 years. (He is a past Chair and Vice Chair) He was also the Judicial Liaison to the Broward County Bar. He is currently the Judicial Liaison to the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and was the Judicial Liaison to the Florida Bar Trial Lawyers Section Executive Council from 2019 through 2022. He is a past or present member of the following Florida Bar Committees: Criminal Procedure and Rules Committee (past), the Code and Rules of Evidence Committee (past), the Civil Procedure Rules Committee (present), and the Criminal Law Section Executive Council (present).
Judge Levenson was honored as the Jurist of the Year in 2019 by the American Board of Trial Advocates and received the Trailblazer award in 2022 from the Broward County Trial Lawyers Association. He received the prestigious Stephen Booher award from the Broward County Bar Association in June 2025
Active in the community, Judge Levenson was previously a mentor and board member with Take Stock in Children, Broward Chapter. A member of the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Rotary Club for over two decades, he served two terms on its Board of Directors.
Judge Levenson and his wife Paula, are parents to five children and the grandparents of three. They reside in Pompano Beach.
