The Honorable Steven Lieberman
The Honorable Steven Lieberman is an Adjunct Professor at St. Thomas University College of Law, where he teaches Family Law. He also serves as a judge in the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Miami-Dade County, presiding exclusively over complex domestic relations cases at the Unified Family Court. From 2007 to 2016, Judge Lieberman served as a General Magistrate and was assigned to the Juvenile Dependency Division, hearing child abuse cases.
Judge Lieberman has been awarded for his outstanding work with improving the lives of children and families and for identifying and improving court efficiencies in getting foster care children quickly placed and adopted into their new homes and families. He has been involved in numerous civil organizations and is actively part of the mentorship programs for paralegals, law students, young lawyers, and the Guardian Ad Litem Program. Most recently, he was appointed by the President of the Florida Bar to the Grievance Mediation and Fee Arbitration Committee.
Prior to joining the bench, Judge Lieberman practiced for 24 years, handling general litigation matters, family/juvenile dependency matters (child abuse cases), appeals, and consumer protection cases. Attorney General Robert Butterworth and Charlie Crist appointed him to serve as an arbitrator for “Lemon Law” cases, where he heard over four hundred cases of defective automobile issues.
Early in his career, Judge Lieberman practiced insurance defense at the law firm handling the litigation in the “Adam Walsh” case. He handled several high-profile cases, including Broward’s first “Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome” case and litigation against the gaming industry.
Judge Lieberman obtained his J.D. degree from Nova Southeastern Shepard Broad College of Law. During law school, Judge Lieberman clerked for the Honorable James Walden of the 4th District Court of Appeals in West Palm Beach.
Before attending law school, Judge Lieberman worked for the Miami-Dade Consumer Advocate’s office and the Consumer Protection Division. He assisted in the passage of the county ordinance which required gasoline stations to post its prices. Additionally, he was involved with a class action lawsuit against two automobile manufacturers involving warped dashboards in certain vehicles.
Judge Lieberman is a graduate of the University of Miami with a B.S. degree in chemistry and a minor in political science.
He has been a proud member of the Florida Bar for over 40 years.
