By Belkis Mejia Perdomo
St. Thomas University (STU) has appointed Dr. Sandra Franco, a podiatric physician surgeon and scientist, as the University’s podiatric physician for all STU Athletics teams. The appointment supports STU Athletics’ commitment to student-athlete health, injury prevention, and performance excellence.
In her role, Dr. Franco will work closely with the athletics department to diagnose, treat, and help prevent lower extremity injuries across all sports programs. Her approach emphasizes proactive care, long-term mobility, and performance optimization for student-athletes.
Dr. Franco earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Nova Southeastern University and her Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from Barry University. Her clinical expertise and research-driven background align with St. Thomas University’s focus on evidence-based care and innovation in student wellness.
As part of this initiative, Dr. Franco will lead the development of a Foundation of Movement and Performance Program. Planned initiatives include the creation of a biomechanics lab equipped with advanced technology to evaluate movement patterns, assess injury risk, and enhance athletic performance. The biomechanics component will be supported through collaboration with PodoActiva, Dr. Franco’s laboratory partner based in Spain, which specializes in advanced biomechanical analysis and performance optimization.
The program also includes plans for a cold laser lab designed to treat common athletic conditions such as plantar fasciitis and other musculoskeletal issues. This component will be supported through collaboration with Erchonia, a partner of Dr. Franco that develops the only FDA-cleared cold laser devices available in the United States and will assist in advancing treatment and recovery options for student-athletes.
“At St. Thomas University, student health is not secondary to competition. We invest in student performance, safety, and long-term well-being,” said Dr. Franco.
The initiative reflects STU Athletics’ holistic approach to student-athlete care by integrating medical expertise, preventive strategies, and innovative technologies to support success on and off the field.
