STU Athletics Adds Laser Therapy Device for Prevention and Recovery
By Bruno Diaz
St. Thomas University Athletics is adding another powerful tool to help keep Bobcat student-athletes healthy, strong, and ready to compete.
A new Erchonia FX 635 low-level laser therapy device was delivered to STU this week, expanding the University’s ability to support injury prevention, recovery, and long-term wellness across its 34 athletic teams. The non-invasive device is designed to help treat chronic low back pain, heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis, and general musculoskeletal discomfort, giving student-athletes access to advanced care that can help them stay in the game.
The FX 365 system uses three 635nm red laser diodes to deliver targeted light energy to areas of strain, overuse, and discomfort. The treatment is designed to stimulate cellular mitochondria, increase ATP production, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing process, all without heat, pain, medication, or downtime.
For STU Athletics, that means a proactive new option for addressing minor issues before they become more serious setbacks.
James Tuffy, AD for Sports Medicine, and Dr. Sandra Franco will lead the effort to incorporate the FX 635 into care for Bobcat student-athletes, bringing together advanced technology and a personal commitment to student well-being.
Dr. Franco is integrating the FX 635 into her work with Bobcat Athletics as an evidence-informed strategy to help athletes recover efficiently and maintain peak physical readiness throughout the demands of collegiate competition. By targeting areas of microtrauma and overuse early, the treatment can support tissue repair and musculoskeletal resilience before discomfort progresses into an injury that affects performance or participation.
The FX 635 also features a patented self-operating laser scanner, allowing for precise, efficient, and non-invasive treatment. With FDA clearances supporting its use for plantar fasciitis, chronic low back pain, and general musculoskeletal pain, the device offers a promising addition to STU’s sports medicine resources.
For Bobcat Athletics, this investment reflects a larger commitment to caring for the whole student-athlete. Keeping athletes healthy is about more than recovery after injury. It is about prevention, durability, consistency, and making sure students have every opportunity to perform at their best in competition, in training, and throughout their academic journey.
