Miami Gardens, FL — September 25, 2025 — St. Thomas University (STU) proudly hosted the official ribbon cutting of its new Fashion & Culinary Center, a vibrant event that showcased the University’s commitment to innovation, creativity, and community. The celebration was led by David Edwards, Dean of the Gus Machado College of Business, who welcomed students, faculty, alumni, partners, and guests to share in this milestone moment.
Launched in 2021, STU’s Fashion Merchandising & Design program in conjunction with the Culinary Arts, Tourism, and Hospitality Management program have quickly become signature academic and experiential offerings. Dean Edwards highlighted student achievements including 1,000+ hours of hands-on learning, the acclaimed McDCouture collection, curated culinary showcases, and the remarkable growth of the annual Fashion & Food Showcase, which has expanded from 400 to over 700 attendees in just four years and raised more than $100,000 in support of student innovation.
Provost Michelle Johnson-Barnes reflected on how the vision came to life. The University transformed its former cafeteria into a state-of-the-art Culinary Lab, secured industrial-grade fashion equipment after the closure of a Miami fashion school, and elevated Fashion Design from a minor to a major, thereby enrolling more than 20 students in its inaugural year.
President David A. Armstrong, J.D., praised the programs’ influence on campus and beyond, emphasizing how STU seamlessly integrates classroom instruction with industry mentorship, creating pipelines to internships and career opportunities. He also recognized key supporters, including Perry Ellis International for its merchandising display donations, and the Fashion and Culinary Advisory Committees for aligning curriculum with industry standards. President Armstrong highlighted a transformational gift establishing the Claudia Borges Fashion Retail Innovation Center, noting that Ms. Borges will continue to mentor students, provide internship opportunities, and serve as a judge in future garment design competitions.
The event featured a blessing from Father Hillary, followed by the ceremonial ribbon cutting with faculty, staff, and leadership. Guests were then invited to enjoy culinary creations prepared by Chef Ivan Valcin and STU students, as well as shop the Retail Innovation Center, where proceeds directly support student learning.
The Fashion & Culinary Center is more than a building. The Center symbolizes STU’s dedication to offering students real-world experiences, mentorship, and industry connections that prepare them for meaningful and successful careers. As President Armstrong concluded, “St. Thomas University thrives when innovation meets opportunity in the pursuit of excellence. This Center is proof of what happens when vision, dedication, and faith come together for our students.”
