This semester, St. Thomas Law’s  LL.M. Program in Intercultural Human Rights  welcomed two top global experts in the field of human rights to share their unique experience and expertise.

These experts came from the top echelon of implementation of human rights at the United Nations and guest-lectured in the new International Bill of Rights class which consisted of a week-long Introduction to Human Rights Law by Professor Siegfried Wiessner, and two weeks on the key global treaties on human rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

His Excellency Ambassador Ahmed Amin Fathalla (Egypt)

The Honorable Virginia Bras Gomes (Portugal)

His Excellency Ambassador Ahmed Amin Fathalla (Egypt), Vice-Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, and The Honorable Virginia Bras Gomes (Portugal), Chair of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, presented  lectures on the covenants and the role of their UN committees, which monitor state performance and express views on individual complaints of violations.

For LL.M. students, this was the introductory class to their program. For J.D. students, it was an elective course, required for those J.D. students who would like to earn a Certificate in Intercultural Human Rights.

St. Thomas Law and it’s LL.M  program in Intercultural Human Rights  holds a long tradition of welcoming global scholars and leaders into our classrooms, building a vital cultural understanding in our students,  and growing their awareness of the human rights abuses and challenges faced in an interconnected world.
