In a Night of Renewal, STU Rededicates Chapel of St. Anthony

By Bruno Diaz

On Tuesday, April 29, the St. Thomas University community gathered in faith, gratitude, and celebration for the Rededication Mass of the Chapel of St. Anthony. Presided over by Archbishop Thomas Wenski, the special Mass marked the completion of the Chapel’s renovation project, an effort made possible through the generous support of the Amaturo Family.

The evening was both a milestone and a tribute, as the university honored the 20th anniversary of the Chapel of St. Anthony’s original dedication. In his homily, Archbishop Wenski reflected on the Chapel’s vital role as the spiritual heart of the campus, calling it “a sanctuary not only of worship, but of hope and unity for all who seek truth and grace.”

The Mass was offered in remembrance of Pope Francis, whose leadership and encouragement will forever inspire the university’s mission of faith, community, and excellence. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and friends of the university filled the newly installed pews, their voices rising in joyful song as they rededicated the sacred space to its purpose as a house of prayer and reflection.

“Last year, almost to the day, Archbishop Wenski, Father Capó and I were in Cuba at the newly renovated Santo Tomas de Villanueva chapel,” said St. Thomas University President David A. Armstrong, J.D. “It made me reflect on the fact that only through God can we build utopia, not through men. Tonight, as we rededicate our Chapel of St. Anthony, we remember our roots, give thanks for the past, and we look forward with hope to the next chapter of our faith journey together.”

As part of the dedication of the altar, relics of St. Maria Goretti were placed within the mensa, while relics of St. Thomas of Villanova, Blessed Carlo Acutis, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati were placed beneath the altar.

Following the Mass, guests toured the beautifully renovated chapel, admiring the refreshed interiors and restored details that honor its legacy while preparing it to serve future generations. Many stayed to pray quietly, offer petitions, or simply sit in the peaceful glow of the space, savoring the moment. A reception was also held for guests just outside the Chapel, and friends old and new shared in dinner and conversation.

As the sun set over campus, the Chapel of St. Anthony stood anew, a beacon of faith, learning, and community at the very heart of St. Thomas University.

May this rededication mark the beginning of many more years of grace, gathering, and shared purpose for the entire STU family.
