Program Overview

In the BS in Biology degree program at STU, our students are prepared for entry into graduate schools in biology or biomedicine as well as schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or other related areas. Students area also able to focus on preparation for technical laboratory careers. Our program emphasizes strong foundations with practical laboratory skills development of our students, student use of modern sophisticated equipment in teaching laboratories, and students working closely with faculty conducting original cutting-edge research.

The Bachelor of Science in Biology degree program offers a solid foundation in biological sciences, research opportunities, and hands-on experience, along with essential analytical and communication skills. Biological Research

Participation in research provides our students with an experience unlike anything that they can realize inside a classroom as they encounter first-hand the excitement of discovery and a new vantage point of what practical science involves. Our students learn the time, effort, and dedication needed to succeed in a scientific career, lessons that are crucial to ensure their success in graduate and professional schools.

Pre-Professional Studies

St. Thomas University students seeking careers in medicine as well as dentistry, podiatry, pharmacy, optometry, chiropractic or veterinary medicine get the courses they need to meet their pre-professional requirements, including a science-based education, opportunities for research, and hands-on experience in their chosen field. In addition, students receive strong analytical and communication skills.

STU offers an Early Acceptance Programs (EAP) for Pre-Health students to attend Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), one of America’s largest and most affordable medical schools. LECOM will admit up to five STU students each to the medicine, pharmacy, and dental EAPs and up to two students to the podiatry EAP. All STU students in the program are guaranteed to receive LECOM admissions interviews. Pending STU and LECOM admissions committee reviews, students can join the LECOM early admission programs between their acceptance to STU and their sophomore year of college, with some students potentially eligible to start their medical school career after just three years of undergraduate study.

Career Landscape

The graduates will be able to find work in the biological, agricultural, pharmaceutical sector or continue their education in graduate school or professional tracks such medical doctor, dentist, pharmacist.

Approximately 25% of our graduates continue their education at the postgraduate level either Master’s or Doctoral in Medicine, PhD, Veterinary, Dental and Physical Therapy.

In the Classroom

The undergraduate experience offers a hands-on approach to scientific development. Our biological sciences program offers small class sizes of fewer than 20 students. This approach allows our faculty to provide personal attention to our students in the classroom and in the laboratory.

Small class and laboratory size also ensures that our students are well trained in the latest techniques needed by today’s scientist. The University has recently demonstrated its commitment to science education by infusing over a million dollars to equip its laboratories with modern research instruments.
