St. Thomas Law Trial Teams Repeat with Wins at ABA Regional Mock Trial Competition

Congratulations to St. Thomas Law’s Trial Team who, as defending champions, won the 2018 ABA Labor Law Mock Trial Regional Competition this past weekend in Miami.

Jennifer Francisco, Judge Edward Newman, Carolina Del Campo, Stephanie Roman, and Yunis Curbelo.

Two St. Thomas Law teams dominated the competition; both going undefeated into the semifinals – ranked 1st and 2nd.

Team One, comprised of Anthony Perez, Cynthia Ventura, Leslie Vega, and Jamie Mathis, went up against Washburn University and Florida Coastal Law. They won and remained undefeated. Team Two comprised of  Yunis Curbelo, Stephanie Roman, Carolina Del Campo, and Jennifer Francisco, went against LSU and Washburn. They also won and remained undefeated.

Team two advanced into the final round and won the Regional Championship advancing to the National Championship Competition in New Orleans in January 2019.

We  salute our trial team coaches Jeff James, Jillian Tate, Karina Harduvel, and Katherine Lopez, and faculty advisor/ Mock Trial Team coach Professor Houson Lafrance ’14 for the hours they dedicated to the preparation of our winning teams.

The American Bar Association’s Section of Labor and Employment Law established this Trial Advocacy Competition to introduce law students to the challenges and rewards of employment and labor litigation. This is the competition’s 15th year.
