STU Announces the John J. Dooner Honors College

St. Thomas University is proud to announce that its Honors College will now be known as the St. Thomas University John J. Dooner Honors College, honoring the life, leadership, and extraordinary generosity of John J. Dooner, a proud Bobcat from the Class of 1970 and former Chair of the STU Board of Trustees.
On December 31, 2025, St. Thomas University mourned the passing of Dooner, who was then serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees. He began his service on the STU Board in 2004 and became Chair in 2013, helping guide the University through the last eight years of significant growth and momentum.
Dooner loved his alma mater deeply and devoted himself to helping STU become the leading Catholic university in the South. At the time of his passing, he was the largest individual donor in the University’s history.
Above all, Dooner loved STU’s students. The students of the Honors College held a special place in his heart.
Last December, the Honors College included more than 70 students. This fall, STU projects that number will grow to more than 100. These students represent the very best of St. Thomas University. Many serve as ambassadors at marquee University events, engaging with future Bobcat families, alumni, and friends of the University while reflecting the spirit and Mission of STU.
In Dooner’s memory, and through the leadership of STU Board of Trustees Chair Jorge Rico and Vice Chair Victor Mendelson, more than $1 million was raised to support the Honors College and strengthen its future.
The John J. Dooner Honors College will continue the vital work of developing ethical leaders and exceptional people. Its students will graduate from St. Thomas University carrying forward the energy, optimism, and spirit of John J. Dooner.
In his memory, they will work to become ethical leaders in the global community, pursue excellence in every endeavor, and proudly represent St. Thomas University wherever they go.
